Summer activities, programs for teens abroad
BM seems to have gone off the deep end, she is reportedly on cocaine and staying with "friends" her son 6, from a dif guy is with gramma, and SD, 15 still really wants to go visit for 2 months this summer. she misses her mother, brother and some friends in the town. (a few states away) We are very against this plan and it is a very sensitive issue, she loves her mom and brother and wants to visit. If she does not go it also signifies the end, it states how bad things are with her mom to the whole world, and not just in her own mind. I think she is terrified for her friends to know her mom is a loser. (really I am not just being prejudice) So to her she is keeping up appearances. Any how. I was thinking that if I gave her an offer she could not refuse I could help change her need to go and make it her choice, instead of us forbidding her a visit to her mom and brother, which is a hard/nearly impossible thing to do. Long story long, anyone have a recommendation for summer programs in Europe? she is 15 and would be hard pressed denying a trip to Europe, it will break the bank, but I am very concerned about her, this is a tough and formative age where decisions made now will affect the future. Did I mention I was worried about her? These are hard issues for a kid to deal with and not turn to drinking and drugs herself. I want to avert that as much as possible and a summer of idleness and no supervision with a druggy mom will not turn out good!!!!

hmmm
I don't have any info on European summer programs, but I am curious too. My SD14's BM is similar, no cocaine though, just a continuous stream of "friends" of the male and female persuasion and bar trips from which she returns 2 days later often leaving SD14 with her sisters. Last time SD16 and her BF started screwing each other on the couch next to SD14 at the bf's house. It was SD14's birthday weekend and none of them even mentioned her birthday. BM was there when we dropped her off but she didn't see BM again until that Sunday. SD14 confided all of this to me 2 weeks after her last visit. I was livid.
BM is a school teacher and we were afraid she would make a play for SD14 this summer. On the one hand I would love a break from SD14, but on the other hand I have done the cleanup detail after 6 month stints with BM and would rather suffer through. So to avert the possibility of BM asking for SD14 this summer, I enrolled her (as well as my biokids) in every type of camp known to man and she is very EXCITED about the camps and summer school (keyboarding and geometry). Her camps run from June 22 through August 6, leaving only 3 additional weeks before school resumes.
Just an idea.....camps like art, debate, engineering, sports she might be interested in, etc.
Good luck,
Evil Diva
Additional camp projects
Try your local theatre. We have a local theatre here (ie. Proctor's in Schenectady or the Palace Theatre in Albany NY) that not only does theatre camps, but they do the "backstage" camps, where kids can learn about scenery and design and setting up a show. It's like a roadie camp! Kind of cool for a young kid to do, and may interest them....
