Fleas, Dog Hair, and the vacuum is too heavy for me?

ScornedSM's picture

So what do I do? Call a maid just to come get SO's dog hair up off the carpets, or what?

It's been a week now and SO PROMISED to vacuum and DE FLEA his and BM's precious dog hair and fleas.

The friggin vaccum weighs a ton and it takes ALL of me to even move it around.

Get rid of the dog? IDK

I'm tired of these damn fleas too. The mutt never quits scratching and I believe I am starting to get bit by them.

I KNOW he works his butt off but he and BM wanted this dog and it is no more my problem than their Kid.

Does DH use a monthly flea & tick repellant, like Vectra 3D? I use it and it seems to work. My dog hasn't had any ticks or fleas (I've had him for a little over a year).

Yes. He just put a monthly repeat on her a few weeks ago. I think they are sand fleas too.

What about him promising to vacuum and groom her though? Seriously. I can't even move this 10 ton thing.

OMG FLEAS??? ugh. What the heck kind of vaccuum do you have that is so heavy you cant use it!? When it comes to fleas, it is not optional. You treat the pet and you vaccuum. Baseboard to baseboard, several times a day, for a week at least. You do not just let it go and live like that! Do you realize how FAST those things multiply??? good lord. If your SO is that worthless and you have nobody you can call, then yes, call a maid service I guess. Or buy a lighter vaccuum (prob cheaper!). This just isnt optional. That dog would be OUTSIDE at the least if it were me.

OMG is right.

Right now there is currently a 25 year old vacuum cleaner that weighs almost as much as I do. (trust me here)

I'M NOT doing it! SO WILL or the dog will be left out on the porch!

I already clean up enough crap for him here.

A maid or a new Vac. Well, he let the ex have the brand new vacuum (that she never uses) and we are strapped in between paying the way for everyone else so that leaves me little choice. (pun intended)

I can call a maid to come do all of this for 50 bucks around here. Paid for by SO.

My dog doesn't shed (sorry), lol, so I don't know the feeling. I do know that when I was younger we had a golden retriever and my Mom vacuumed like 4 times a day (no joke).

As for the fleas, I have no idea other than the repellant (which should work if you apply it every 30 days). I've never had to deal with that.

Hire a maid service and start all over. If the repellant is being applied correctly there shouldn't be any fleas. And I've heard that those suckers multiply quickly, so someone needs to get on it, even if its you for the time being.

Dogs need to be groomed. You really need to talk to your DH about this.

I've got three big dogs but haven't had fleas in YEARS because I use a monthly flea/heartworm prevention. Sentinel. Damn expensive but it is SO worth it. Once you HAVE fleas you need to use a household flea spray, and repeat it in 10 days (I think, check instructions of course). And if that doesn't work you need to get an exterminator in. But you MUST keep the place clean and vacuum frequently. Fleas bite people too. If you can't handle the vacuum and if SO won't do it, you have to get a new vacuum. You have no choice, other than to live with fleas. Or not live there.

I cant say it enough...like the others said, you just cant leave this alone. I have been saying "no" to getting a dog for over 10 years, but I do have a cat. I had her for at least 12 years without one single incident with fleas (she doesnt go outside, no claws) but one time I lived in an apartment where dogs were allowed, and the vet told me that it surely came from a dog or dog owner as they went from outside to inside thru my same hallway!

Since I had never experienced this, I had NO idea of it at ALL until we were completely infested and they were biting my kids! I had to put all stuffed animals into black bags. I had to put pillows and blankets thru a hot dryer cycle. I had to vacuum vacuum vaccum in addition to treating the cat!! Honest to god, it was the same as if your kid gets lice at school! Even if you get all the bugs, the life cycle includes eggs! Totally gross...seriously...

We live in the south and fleas were really bad a few years ago and it was a nightmare. Several times in one month we had to have the carpets sprayed and shampooed. Cost me a fortune, but they finally were gone. Now we are good about flea dips and the drugs for the dogs. You have to do a pest control call and then shampoo a few days later. All stuffed animals in the bags. Wash everything you can. These things are awful. What I also did was take a Labrador and had her shaved. She didn't have them the small dog did. We shaved them both. Groomers didn't want to do it, but I was adamant to do everything to get the fleas out of the house. Buy a good vacuum and carpet cleaner. Worth every penny. Call the pest control and have them spray inside the house. Good luck!!

Thanks guys.

I bought a new vac last night and DH used it. He is taking his dog for a flea dip tommorow.

Love the dog but it really never grew on me, only its fleas...
