OT My Employers Pissing Me Off

Lillywy00's picture

I asked my manager 2 levels up to give me 8 hrs of my PTO (that I earned) so that I could move ... (I asked it in a polite corporate tone)

Probably should have made up a lie (like I need the time for medical issues) or something but I was honest.

Im trying to move during a weekday while he is at work.

I asked 3 weeks (well in advance IMO) and she keeps blowing me off.

We're in our busy season so really they don't like us taking time out now but

1. The company revokes part of our PTO at the end of the year. Some of it does not roll over so if we don't use it we lose it.

2. She took a whole day last week for herself

3. Some of these employees just no call no show and at least I'm giving ample notice.

4. I haven't taken time off in months. And unless they're going to give me a cash payout for my unused pto then I am expecting to use the PTO I accrued / earned.

I have no clue why they try to hold us hostage. I get it's the busy season but if we have something pressing, aren't always calling out, and they know time doesn't roll over at years end, then what is their problem?

I really don't want to have to wait another weekend to move let alone move while this dude and his kids are here because my employers are acting like corporate sl@ve drivers.

I hope this lady stops playing around and go ahead and gives me my weekday off.

Have you approached your direct manager?

I will be honest.. I typically do not "ask" if I can take my PTO. I notify my manager,  If there are issues related to task coverage.. I will put that in my notice.

Maybe you have a formal policy process... and need to wait for approval.. but if you have not heard in a reasonable time.. and I think a few working days for a near termm ask.. maybe a little longer for a further out request.. I would follow up with your direct manager on your request.

And must be taken care of.  You were not asking for time off to vacation.  Even though Thanksgiving ,people do the family thing. And need time off. That why , you have PTO time.  You need to move,  an employer wants it's employees to have a place to live, a bed to sleep in. Food. to eat.  So they can do there job.

I once notified my boss that I was taking a day off three months ahead of the date. His boss refused it because I had given too much notice ...

Ugh I hate when employers play games with peoples time/money

Last year my employers didn't tell me I accrued pto (the slick b@stards want to keep everyone working like sl@ves), when I discovered I had it, I requested to use it, they denied it (saying it was busy season - December- and too many people already out), then January comes and I discover (unbeknownst to me) that it doesn't roll over in the new year ... 30+ hrs of pto earned ... gone!....then days later I got COVID and had to take 5 days out (unpaid)

I was so f*cking livid!!!

I don't condone violence and would never do such a thing (I work remotely anyways) ... but I see why people be blowing up their employers offices

I told the team in our group chat that their pto will not rollover (most of them didn't even know they had pto or where to look for their accruals) and the company tried to silence me from talking about it.

Check your state law. If your employer has a PTO plan/policy, the employer is obligated to inform employees of it, and the terms of the PTO, in the employer terms of employment.

My company does that too. You have to use it or lose it and they don't like people taking off at the end of the year. No payout either. My first year i lost all of it. I thought i was being such a stellar worker not taking any days off the first year. It sucks because they don't "front-load" it, either. You keep accruing up to the last day and then they take it. Now i do the calculations and make damn sure i don't lose any. Hopefully if you talk to your manager they will work with you. If not, the old "extreme diarrhea" call-in might be what you have to do. I hate to do things like that but sometimes you have no choice.
