Am I expecting too much??

jaohlund's picture

My kids are grown so it's quite possible I've forgotten what to expect (or not expect as the case is here) from a 12 year old. We are leaving on Sunday for vacation and trying to get the house and yard in order before we go. It's always nice to come home to a clean house after vacation and we are having a large group of people over the day after we get home.
I remind the SKID that he needs to clean his room and bathroom - he of course pretends like he knows nothing about that. He does a half *assed job at both and then wants to go outside. I suggest that he ask his dad if he needs help in the yard. Dad is weedeating so of course says no for now. Here's where I'm not sure if I'm expecting too much...Do other 12 year olds help without being asked, guided, prodded and poked or is he just typical? I have a hard time sometimes knowing what to expect and if I'm just being over critical of him.

Thanks...I am totally on him - but it feels like it's all the time! I just don't want it to turn into a 17 year old kid who won't do anything!

I love it! My SKID is totally capable (I think) but chooses the "oh, I didn't know" act all the time. Right now, he is taking total advantage of the fact that I am working from home and therefore can't stand over his shoulder and inspect his work. That will change when I am off at 6pm!
My DH doesn't help the issue because his answer is "Oh, I'll just do it. I like it done a certain way." Yeah, me too - and SKID needs to learn that way!
I am so happy I found this website! I might have gone completely crazy by now!

Oh trust me...he will step up! I also agree about the gender specific chores...there are no boy/girl jobs at my house. When I first met SS, he told me laundry "is a girl's job". Oh no no, little man!

I don't mind the gender driven...there are some jobs I'd really rather prefer my husband does. I just don't want any "oh that's a girl's job..."
