OT - Follow-up to Half-Sister post

So. I did it. I bit the bullet. I messaged my half-sister. I took the leap yesterday and sent her a message that I would have liked to receive and it wound up being a very long winded message. But, I told her a little about myself, told her that I would completely understand if she didn't want to talk to me and that this would be my only message to her if she didn't so as not to put any pressure on her.

And then, I let it slip to the back of my mind so I wouldn't be hyperfocused on facebook all day.

Well, about an hour ago, I received a message back from her on Facebook! She's delighted that I messaged her as she had tried to connect with our dad's side of the family while growing up, but was blocked by her mom (kind of like how my mom blocked me when I became curious about her) and eventually gave up. Then when her mom passed away, she figured that she would never get that chance. She and I have a lot of common interests and she's also curious about health issues, too because she doesn't seem to have a link to any of the ones she has in her mom's side of the family. And, she's long winded as well, so she didn't mind my long message ^_^.

I can't begin to express how truly happy I am right now that I did this. I am so excited that I not only took that big leap to talk to her, but, am also excited that she wants to get to know me better Smile

Thank you to everyone who offered advice and support!!! As usual, you are all amazing Biggrin

Thanks!! This turned out way better than I expected. I was hoping for good things, but, was expecting that I probably wouldn't hear back from her. But now we're connected on FB, so I guess FB has some good points after all haha.

Very very nice! Here's a fun story for you. I went to a family reunion about 15 years ago. I only knew my mom, everyone else I'd met as a very young child (like, under 5) and otherwise never seen again. I was sitting in the host family's living room, and the husband walked out from the kitchen carrying a bunch of stuff. I jumped up and said, "Hey, what can I do to help? I'm not just for decoration, you know."

The man stared for a reaaaalllly long second and replied, "You sound just like my wife. It's really scary!"

My whole family is wordy and sarcastic and helpful, it's like a genetic thing! So much fun to see these "family' characteristics reflected!!

It really is! And it's doubly fascinating for me since I want to go into a Personality, Health, and Social Psych program for PhD. So I'm always interested in what comes about through genetics and what comes about through the environment in which one grows up.

She and I both spent our teenage years very similarly, vegged out in front of a TV watching horror movies all weekend lol. Just too funny. Only she did it about 7 years before I did.

Thanks Biggrin

Thanks Biggrin I'm hoping so. My one coworker thinks that the timing of it all can definitely help us to be more friends than anything, which is what I've kind of always wanted with a sister. My full sister and I aren't really friends and never have been - we're just too different. But, my half-sister and I, the similarities are startling in the best way possible ^_^
