11 y/o acting like a Baby
SD11 came to our house with a nasty cold. Congested, coughing, etc. She has sounded this way for 3 days without getting better. DH told her to come get some medecine downstairs in the kitchen. A cough and cold syrup.
SD: Nevermind, I'm find *starts to walk away and go back upstairs*
DH: No, it's not a choice if you want medicine or not. You're not going to walk around making everyone else sick too.
**FOR THRITY MINUTES** I overhear DH coaching SD "through it". Hold your nose, grab some water, etc.
SD starts crying because "it smells and tastes so bad." DH kept his cool. I definitely would NOT have. The entire time she is stomping on the floor, cringing, and pretending to gag on the syrup. Acting like she is being TORTURED. She finally finished a whole 2 tablespoons without dying.
DH: See, it wasn't that bad.
SD11: Stomps off upstairs and locks herself in the bathroom. I immediately hear her phone. Ding, ding, ding. Probably texting BM how DH was abusive or something.
I just can't with the drama. I know in general, kids don't really like medicine. But she is 11. I would think most kids would just make a face, maybe say *grosssss*. But this level of drama is something else. I think her defiance disorder just comes out even more in situations like this.
Anyone else have a pre-teen or older that acts like this when taking medicine?

My ex SS was like this. I was in his life from 4-6 and would have to sit on him to take any medicine. It was HORRIBLE! I can't imagine dealing with an 11 yr old like that. I wouldn't have the patience. It would be take it or put on a mask and don't come out of your room. Give her canned chicken noodle for lunch and dinner. LOL
AND give her a covid test for
AND give her a covid test for good measure!
BM took SD for a covid test
BM took SD for a covid test last fall! They went to one of the pharmacy drive thrus. BM told DH she had to physically hold her down in the car and swore NEVER again. I would have died from embarassment if I were BM. Then again, I would never allow my bio to act like that.
I would have been so angry if
I would have been so angry if this was my child. I know the test is uncomfortable, but 11 is way too old to not be able to put up with a moment of discomfort.
Lol, yes! Slide in a food
Lol, yes! Slide in a food tray?
Imagine a sick kid who
Imagine a sick kid who refuses to take meds, refuses to eat soup or broth of any kind AND refuses juice or gatorade of any kind. Fun times. I withdrew from sick bed help very early on.
I always gave a marshmallow
I always gave a marshmallow or two to get the medicine down. Easier than giving a dog a pill wrapped up in cheese.
Spawn at 16 couldn't swallow
Spawn at 16 couldn't swallow pils, she would gag and spit and cry...at 16!! So she had to get liquid everything, so she would gag and heave trying to swallow liquid antibiotics. She was searching for the childrens liquid tylenol one time and I told her we were out but she could take a pill. She literally turned white and almost passed out. I told her to just toss is back and swallow some water with it. She choked and gagged and dry heaved on that thing for a good 15 minutes. Which is so interesting to me because on her OF page she brags about one of her services is BJ's with sex toys....guess she got over her horrible inability to swallow stuff.
Only Fans?! Oh. My. Gosh.
Only Fans?! Oh. My. Gosh. Your DH must be so PROUD.
OSD for sure. Screaming
OSD for sure. Screaming crying, etc. She only took medicine if she was reallllllly sick, too sick to argue. Most of the time she went without. Not my issue at all. She ended up learning how to take pills around age 12 because she discovered she didn't taste anything that way - plus period cramps necessitated Advil. Anything bigger than an Advil was a no-go though because she gagged on them.
YSD does not take medicine pretty much ever. She did ok with kids liquids though. Still doesn't know how to take pills at age 15.
I remember as a kid my mom putting sugar into the bitter meds to make us take them (fun fact: salt works better!!!) and she taught me and my sister to swallow tic tacks to prep us for pill taking. Neither BM nor DH did either of these for SDs.
My SD is the same. She won't
My SD is the same. She won't take real medicine aside from Zyrtec. Other than that she will only take BMs alternative medicine concoctions.
This is SStween
He starts crying at the sight of the medicine bottle. He can't swallow pills, has to take liquid, "but it tastes disgusting!" He wants to smell it, he wants to taste it, which then turns into him spitting out the tiny bit on his tongue and crying even harder. He is having an all out meltdown by the end of it. When he has been in the hospital, 3 nurses have to hold him down while one squirts it down his throat. It takes over an hour to get any medicine in him and usually comes down to having to take him out to the car, prepared to go to the hospital to get a shot. We only give him medicine if it's prescribed or if he has a mid-grade or higher fever.
All of this was caused by BM. During the court case she wanted to prove that DH couldn't medically care for the skids, she not only allowed this behavior but rewarded SStween for it as a child. Well guess what that looks like now? A messed up 10 year old! What an amazing mother she is.
Tell them they can swallow or do it the french way
Tell them to swallow the pill or the medicine or offer a suppository. *diablo*
I have to confess that I found it impossible to manage pills until I was in my mid teens. What solved it was real pain. I knew I NEEDED pain relief and it was only going to happen if I managed to get the pill swallowed. I find taking a massive gulp of water and then putting the pill in my mouth works better than the traditional pill followed by water. For some reason it fools my gag reflex.
