why is comparing the bible to real history and events is do taboo?

purpledaisies's picture

I've been studying the history and comparing it to the bible b/c I'm curious always have been. This is not my question here or my intention of discussing religion. My question why is it every time that a family member or a friend or even the librarian will say they will pray for me and that I shoukdnt be digging into this. That I should leave it alone and that all I need to know is that god is god period. ?

I don't get it, I'm not trying to prove or disprove anything I'm merely curious and I want to see where it leads me. Just me and I'm not interested in trying to convenice anyone that god exists or not. I'm merely on a quest to answer my own questions.

I'm just tired of hearing that I'm messing with something I shouldn't. But why what are they afraid of that ill find out? If anything? Why do people have to react that way. Can't they just let me fo my own research without saying they will pray for me or make the cross over their body? As if I'm something to be afraid of? Ugh

Well, I'd say that the path to true knowledge starts with acknowledging that we, as human mortals, know nothing. From that source of humility, provided we are intent on seeking truth, the journey can lead us to where we need to be during this life.

Do your research and hopefully you will come to find your own path. It isn't always about the destination; the journey is what gets us there. Good luck Smile

Oh thank you souch first person to say that to me. You are right we know nothing which is why I'm doing all the research I can to get to my own path. It started out that the bible didn't make sense to even as a young child. Then to present day to see that is true and what is not. I've never been one to as I'm told without questioning. This is my questioning. I don't know where it will lead me but at least I'm trying to make sense of it. And not just a person doing what I'm told just b/c I was told.

We think alike on that! Personally, I chalk it up to others not knowing what else to say so they pray for ya. Heck I do it myself and for me I'm either biting my tongue, wanting to say I hear ya yet I don't want to discuss it beyond that at that point bc I have no further replies, or when I actually mean it. All depends on the person and or question for me. I also say it when I feel that there is no other/better answer I can give...

Yea this post is not about the discussion of religion but more of why can't I live my live witout others thinking I need to be 'saved' for lack of a better word. All I want to do is do my own investigation and come to my own conluction. I don't go to people and tell them they are all wrong b/c the believe in a certain religion so I just wish others would give me the courtesy. That is all.

Thank you for commenting I do appreciate it.

I totally agree.
It seems that people forget that reason and intelligence are also gifts given by God (how/whatever you think God may be) to humanity.
And we also seem to forget that the bible itself was written/edited by humans.

Good luck on your research, Purple. I think you're into a very interesting and enlightening journey.

You know tog you are so right. Even my mom wouldn't listen to me. The only person I can use as a sounding board is dh. He is being very supportive.

I will tell you the more I read the more I lose 'faith'.

I think what you are doing is great and the way you are going about it is fine. It seems as if you have come across certain types of people who will never understand the need to know first hand as mch as you can with this subject. Most people were born into a religion and that was their life or they went to church and were read excerpts and that was enough for them.

You are on your own journey. Ignore the odd comments and continue with what makes you happy.

I have tons of books ranging from historical fiction to world war two. I love books which must be a dying art because I had a couple men help me move and sure enough after a few days at work people were wondering if I was a nazi. Turns out one of the men saw my books saw the swastika andxc made so ridiculous conclusion. That's all is takes. I laughed. Some people really are that simple.

Oh Purpledaisies - I have lived with this my whole life. My grandmother who was the only mother figure I ever really knew beats me over the head with this very same thing. She is 92 right now. I picked her up from the hospital to take her home 2 weeks ago (she lives 47 miles away from me) and the whole ride home I got lectured about how our whole family is going to hell. It doesn' matter to her that I've been at my job for 25 years, raised 2 good children and have lived a good life. All that matters is that I'm going to hell because I do not go to church on Sundays (And it was a Sunday that she got released from the hospital so she didn't go to church that day either! But that's ok for her). And my cousin is going to double hell because she is dating a man 10 years younger than her. I tried to explain that he makes her happy and she actually yelled at me that "THAT'S NOT THE POINT! The point is that relationship is not right for her and the bible says to treat your body like a temple, and she's not so she's going to hell!!" It took everything I had not to boot her 92 year old ass out onto the country road we were on. I've tried to question things with her and ask her to see logic, but she gets so freaking SCARED and just freaks out.

I have been interested in religion and history together my whole life and I've studied whatever I could find. There is value in the bible as partly a historical document. So you keep doing your research and find your path and what makes sense to you. I did. Haters gonna hate.

ETA: I've heard the blanket statement 1000 times "It's not for us to know" which makes me just want to know more - I'm a rebel like that.LOL }:)

What kind of people do you hang with? lol.

I am Christian and I totally encourage you or anyone to do research and then more research.

Why on earth would anyone NOT want you to research it?

purpledaisies's picture

Well to answer who I hang with, it my family. Especially my in laws. Then the other night at work someone said something about the bible that wasn't true and I corrected them. Shouldn't shave done that lol. truth is I don't think most of the people I come in contact with don't want to hear that the bible isnt 100% historically accurate. But I've been coming to the conclusion that it wasn't meant to a historical document. Or even scientificly accurate.

Thank you so much for all you support.
