LICE!

the_stepmonster's picture

I understand that sometimes, especially where girls are involved, lice happens. Especially when they are in school and around such an infestation. HOWEVER...I do find it terribly troublesome when the only child who has it (SD4stb5) is the one who does nothing but stay home with a nanny all day. (Oh, you didn't know about the nanny? I must have failed to disclose that in my attempt to not bad-mouth the Ex. I'm so glad that's over.) I also find it rather troublesome that it took me, the mostly uninvolved stepmother, to notice that the poor kid was scratching every five minutes and inspect her head. I'm talking full blown infestation. And considering I only see them every other weekend, who knows how long this kid has been suffering. Unfortunately I made this discovery right before they were to go back to their natural habitat (BM's) so we couldn't do anything about it right then and there except tell her and hope she takes care of it.

Here is my question. How does a child acquire lice when that child does not attend day care nor participate in any other activity which would require her to be around other children? Oh and how does that same child, whose mother is a teacher, not know her ABC's at stb age 5? Yeah it's unrelated but I felt something and decided to go with it. Anyway, I must go and disinfect my home now. Please discuss among yourselves.

BM's a teacher? It's possible BM brought home the lice. Whatever you do, please do not use the chemical treatments for lice. There are natural alternatives that do not involve pesticides, which are neurotoxins.

You would think if BM had lice she would have noticed and treated it and made sure her children treated. Also, its strange that all 3 SD's don't have it also. They all have long hair. Some mysteries will never be solved.

We don't have the privilege of treating SD4. She is with BM for the next 2 weeks so I am crossing fingers this will be taken care of before they come back.

My DD STB12 got lice 2 years ago from the rug rats next door, and NO you can only get it from another infested person or by using the infested persons brush or wearing their clothes. Anyway, it was a nightmare, she has THICK WAVY LONG hair (think Julia Roberts in her younger years)unbelievably gross. I felt like a Momma monkey picking the bugs out of her hair!

I've dealt with lice for years, having 2 girls and all. Usually they would get it from school and they multiply FAST! If it's as infested as you describe I would think she has had them a couple weeks. The time required to take care of the problem is strenuous and tiring to say the least. All your bed linens will have to be washed, stuffed animals, pillows etc will have to take a trip through the dryer (maybe twice) you will need to vacuum your floors and furniture, if she rode in your vehicle vacuum it out as well, boil any hairbrushes or combs the child may have used etc.

What infuriates me is SO's daughter seems to get them all the time and the mother and her boyfriend don't go through her hair because they both have poor eye sight so they have someone else do it. For a month everytime I went to that house to pick those children up I could see nits and didn't even have to pick through her hair! Of course they have been told as long as she has lice she will not be going with dad, I have 4 other children to worry about! I am NOT going to risk it!

Not only that but they were so dumb they continued to send her to school, this was at the beginning of the year before they did lice checks! My SO even called the school and asked if she was there, they said they could not disclose that information to him since he was not on the contact list for either child. He told them he had suspicions she had lice. I'm not sure what happened after that but if I were another child's parent and I found out that another parent KNOWINGLY sent their lice infested child to school heads would be rolling! It's selfish and ignorant and it's the perfect way of spreading the little buggers. They are like fleas to a dog.
