I'm trying to disengage, not become a back seat parent

Hello Its Sami Jo's picture

Yesterday I had to work at 5 and SD13 gets off of the bus at 4:25 so I wanted to be long gone. Of course DS1 woke up from his nap and ran to the door, "mommy no go" and cried, so I stayed until 4:25. As I was leaving SD13 was getting off of the bus. She stopped me, after refusing to really talk to her for a week, other than the go ask your dad comments, and asks me a stupid question.

SD13- will I get in trouble for asking the bus driver to turn the heat down?

Me- thought about it for a second and knew there was more to it so: idk go ask your dad.

SD13- UGHHHHH *stomps off like an elephant*

After SO took her to the bus stop today he told me the driver, a very nice man, got off of the bus to speak to him and SD13 ran to her seat. Apparently SD13 didn't ask nicely, at all. She was, for lack of a better word, a little facking cunt, as usual.

SO was shocked, I laughed. SD13 does this to EVERYONE and tries to make it their fault.

Then he said "Looks like she's grounded for another week."

I just looked at him.

SO- what?

Me- she's been grounded for 2 weeks now. Actually more like 3 days since you didn't enforce it, as usual.

SO- what would you do?

Me- I would have taught my child respect when they were young to start. BUT if it were my child and nothing worked (because it's not enforced) I'd take her to that bus stop and make her apologize in front of everyone and explain what she did and why it was wrong. I'd actually ground her for once and not let her run to BM2's house to cry.

SO- that sounds good..

2 hours later...

SO- BM2 doesn't want SD13 this weekend so she's going to BM2's mom's.

Me- is that a good idea?

SO- what do you mean?

Me- she has unlimited Internet access there, which isn't allowed at all because of the inappropriate pictures, comments etc and you STILL haven't addressed that issue with BM2's mom yet. All she does there is play and every time she gets grounded and you stick to it she runs off. And she's failing everything! Except for the classes you just need to show up for. What happened to helping her study this weekend and actually making her read so she can learn to spell simple words?

SO- oh yeah, you're right. I'll just let her go Thursday night and come home Friday so she can study.

Works for me! I'm off Thursday but work all weekend so I won't have to smell, see or hear the elephant.
