Progress!

Just thought I would share with everyone that SD13 has lost 52 pounds as of today. We got custody of her in August and took her to the doctor to have it documented. She went in for shots today and it was confirmed that she has lost 52 pounds. The best part about it is that she never dieted. We just don't watch a lot of TV and she did sports! Way to go SD13!

That's awesome way to go SD13, keep up the good work! I wish I could do that, I get motivated to a point with my exercise bike, or my billy blanks video and now the wii fit...but that last a couple days then it's back to sitting in front of the computer or tv. Last night I decided that since I seem to be getting stressed out a bit more lately that I would exercise to relieve that stress instead of holding it in and eating due to stress. I am hoping my plan works!

In order to motivate her to do well in sports, we had to motivate ourselves. I myself am a HUGE computer fan and could spend hours on it. I've actually had to set a timer to limit my time. When she started sports we would go out there and run the track with her to keep her pace up. We would ride bikes with her or walk to go get ice cream. I've noticed that when we exercise with her I'm in a better mood. I think you're on the right track. Stick with it. I've read somewhere that it takes 21-30 days to form a good habit. If you can make it those days it will begin to seem like second nature to you. Keep it up!

that is a lot of weight for a child that young. That is awesome! How does she feel about herself now?

She's been so heavy for so long that she is still uncomforatable with compliments. She loves the fact she has new "skinny" clothes and that we gave her old ones away. As odd as it is, she is kind of in awe that she actually has boobs. I'm not quite sure how to handle that.

She is proud of her weight loss, but she is unsure of her new body. I'm not really sure what to do to help her feel comfortable with it.

I am a TV connoisseur. As such the finger I use to activate the remote is in outstanding condition. The rest of me however has not been consistently in shape for more than 10yrs. If my work requires me to be active I get in shape in a hurry. If I am on a consulting project focusing on business processes which keeps me in an office or conference room for hours on end each day I get out of shape in a hurry.

What I did to address my couch potato status and intermittently sedentary work environment was put a treadmill in front of the TV and watch TV from the treadmill rather than the couch.

I set the goal of 30mins per evening and quickly got to several hours just by walking through the news, etc..... 5-10lbs per week is not unusual when I watch TV from the treadmill.

My ultimate problem is consistency.

Congrats to your SD and your family. You have all done a great job getting her health in order.

You should all be proud of her and yourselves for supporting a healthier life style for her.

My own SS (16) has lost and kept off more than 40lbs this school year. It is amazing what Military School will do for a under-motivated couch potato (he is after-all my son).

Congrats again and best regards,

Funny you mentioned the treadmill. My husband used to joke that he ought to hook up our TV to a treadmill so we would have to use it to power the TV. If we slowed down the TV would dim. Way to go for your SS!

My SD is overweight. Quite a bit for her age. She's 14 and weighs around 210. I hate it for her. And she does to, she tells me how she wishes she could wear little cloths like me. Sad

I do what I can when she is at my house. But when she goes back on it's all for nothing. Her mom doesn't cook for her usually. A child left to fend for themselves usually goes for sweets, etc.

I'm so happy for you and your SD. I bet she is VERY proud of herself. And she sure should be! That's a great thing for a child her age! What an accomplishment.

I would take her out for a round of mini golf or something to celebrate her accomplishment!!

~~I'm so glad to see that in the right situation kids will change for the better (some kids)~~~ it gives me hope.

For her reward we let her pick our next destination for our family get away and she gets to bring a friend. It's going to be a long weekend for me listening to the valley girl talk (like oh my gosh), but she worked hard and deserves a reward. We are so proud of her!

I hope more than anything that we have educated her. We taught her how to prepare a meal plan, grocery shop and cook. We also taught her portion control. She couldn't believe how much weight she lost until I handed her our 20lb baby and a 30lb weight to hold at the same time. That really shed some light on her situation.
