All over a piece of wood - nice piece - but still....

I just had to say this......

This week while at my MIL's she gave us the butcher block that DH built with his dad when he was about 10 yrs old. It's a gorgeous sturdy 4ftsq solid piece of art and looks good in my kitchen and is useful.

This evening ss20 was in there and he was telling his dad it's a family heirloom and he wants it when he is married and DH is saying no he'd get it when DH kicks it in about 30 years. DH had earlier asked me to google how to clean it back to it's original state b;/c it sat for 10 years as a plant holder and the oil has caused dust to build on it about 1/8 inch+ thick. I came into the kitchen saying we'd have to sand it down and then refinish it. Ss20 said no he was told by his aunt (Dh's sister who had used it for a plant holder) that there will be no sanding. I said well whatever is in my house no matter who it belongED to and who it goes to and whatever, it's mine and it will look nice while its in my kitchen. Ss20 yelled at DH it's not Steels and there is no way he wants me to refinish it and he'd take it NOOOOWWW. Dh just told ss20 to go and cool off outside that this was not his house and it's steels and my house and this is our butcher block, so go outside. Ss20 left 4 hours ago and is not back. I made and put away dinner and we've locked the doors. DH is so pissed at ss20 he declares he is going to make sure Job Corps has a bed for him this week b/c ss20 is pushing everyone's buttons.

Bottom line - I am glad DH stuck up for me, even on something so small, and even though I am going to refinish that block anyhow, and it's ours and not ss20's since his dad made it anyhow. It shouldn't have even sat at DH's sister's all this time either.

Side note - Dh's mom had a good talk with him this past week while we were there about how he needs to get ss20 out of the house, his dad had him out by 18 b/c he was treating her rudely, even bio sons have to move on and grow up and she told him she is worried that if ss20 stays too long he will lose me. NO DUH. She said that, and she told DH that if he loses me he'll never find anyone else to replace me and the family would kick his ass, sooooo she said kick that adult brat son out NOW. Of course I am so glad she had that convo with DH! I love my MIL!! Tonight just confirmed to DH how very controlling his kid is and how he NEEDS to GO!

Rather than sanding it you may want to strip it with a wood stripper and steel wool then oil it with a natural oil if you are going to use it as a chopping block/cutting board. This will let it keep it's patina while freshening up the appearance and using a natural oil should keep it safe for food prep.

Either way you have to get the decades of grunge off of it to safely use it to prep food on.

I used this method on my DWs antique hope chest that was in a similar state to what you describe the chopping block as being in. This lets you keep the original stain and finish but clean up the wood and make it glow with an oiled finish.

As for SS20. If it will chap his ass paint the chopping block pink. }:)

Your DH is right about the job corps. Better yet, how about the Marine Corps. They are experts at dealing with young assholes like your SS20 and turning them in to young men of character.

This morning DH admitted he is getting totally fed up with ss20. Dh's dad kicked him out at age 16 (of course times have changed right?) Also DH said ss20 luckily has a healthy respectful fear of me b/c he knows he's only a breath away from me kicking him out for the fourth time.
