OT- PMS? Advice please

Last-Wife's picture

I am going to be 39 in March, and for the first time in my life, I am suffering from PMS!

This past fall, I have had horrible pre-period symptoms- tender breasts, terrible acne, insane food cravings, murderous mood swings. My December cycle was the worst ever, and this January one is about to kill me- or I'll kill someone else. I ache all over, i can't sleep but I am exhausted, I can't keep a coherent thought, I cry about everything, killer migraines and I am so angry about the stupidest shit.

What the hell is going on? Does it get bad before starting menopause?

A little bit more info- i have polycsytic ovarian syndrome. Never had a normal cycle in my life. Usually my cycle was 2, maybe three days tops. Had the Essure procedure done about 2 years ago and now my body has been clockwork. Every 28 days, right on schedule, lasts 5 days, heavier flow that I used to have, but still much lighter than I think most women have...

But never mood swings like this. I'm about to fall apart...

What's going on?

um. yes. sorry Sad peri-menopause + pcos = your experience right now.
I went on the pill for a while about that time. just to regulate the surges a bit.
if you can find any herbal stuff with black cohosh in it, might help.

Sorry!!!

ummm. A really good anti depressant can be amazing.... Just a suggestion. Works super slick for me. Last few periods took me completely by surprise! & I have always been clockwork & quick 25 day cycles & insane PMDD.

I hate to say this but (for most people)the PMS gets worse and last longer as you go into peri-menopause. I have tried several different things and some work better than others.

First off I suggest taking a good multi vitamin with calcuim every day and get plenty of rest.

Take a trip to a Health food store in your area. Talk to someone they can help you out. If they don't know their stuff go to a different one.

Check into natural products like black cohosh, wild yam, soy and phytoestrogens these will help with the symptoms. The internet has all sorts of info. They even have natural anti-depressants that help.

Make an appointment with a good gyno and have a CBC done. If the gyno is good they will know this but there is several things you should have checked including your CBC, thyroid panel and vitamin D levels.

Keep trying new things or changing things up to meet your symptoms. What you find works today may not work long term.

I have tried many pharmaceutical products (anti-depressants) but find that they give me too many side effects which isn't good. I want to feel better not just have different symptoms.

There is a study out that Tylenol twice a day helps relieve emotional or phsychological symptoms. Don't know if it works but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it.

Oh yes, and a cup of hot tea is relaxing.

An herbal or natural route is using Vitex, 7-Keto (DHEA) and Dong Quai. All of these can balance your hormones.

OMG, I know what you mean. Same here. Never had PMS. I hit 40 and BAM. For 6 straight months I felt like my uterus was falling out through my vag. Gyno said it is normal.

At any rate, it worked itself out. She said it was a normal part of the transition. Maybe she wasn't surprised because of my personal situation.

Thanks, ladies. I meet with my nutritionist in 2 weeks to see what advice she has for me. If it's this bad next month, I'm going to see my gyno. I can't live like this!
