Medical question/concern...

Does anyone know anything about hyperthyroidism? My doctor has said for a little while that she wanted me to get tested for a thyroid levels b/c she thinks mine is hyperactive. I do have some symptoms but nothing that affects my life, that I notice anyway. So I went and got my labs done yesterday and I was reading up on it too. What I read scared the crap out of me. That it can cause bone and heart disease if not taken care of, etc. etc...

Over all I consider myself a healthy person, or I strive to be one anyway. The stress kills me but I eat and exercise properly. I also won't hear back on my results for a little while.

Just wondering if anyone has experience or knowledge of this subject b/c I'm worried that I could be really sick. I'm thinking the worst b/c I don't really know anything about it also. Any info. please let me know thanks...

hyperthyropid, it's not like yhou are going to die or anything. Take your meds and you will be fine. The problems mostly result when it is not detected or managed.
You can read up on the web about it.
I have a thyroid tumor but they are not going to do anything because they said there is a low incidence of thyroid cancer and it could just be a enlarged parathyroid.
You'd think I'd get better medical care being we have top of the line medical insurance. I have had all kinds of tests, from sonograms to bloodwork to nuclear testing... a few times.

If it turns out that I have to take medication, that I assume will slow down my production of the thyroid hormone, will this make me gain weight and/or make me become unhealthy? Or should it just kick me into being "normal" and I should still be of the same health and weight?

but does not mean you WILL gain weight.
You will have to see what treatment doctor wants to do and take it from there.
hyerthyroid is called graves disease. I was tested for that... nuclear medicine, drink yucky stuff and come back 8 hours later.
Now they use pills, not the yucky liquid you drink ( I've had that nuclear test twice now, once in 1980 and last year too)

I have no graves disease and thyroid is working, I just have a lump in it, they say low chance of cancer in the thyroid and they will watch it...

When your thyroid is working right you feel better, you will be calmer and not so tense or hyper.

If you were to have any body organ fail, this is the one you want... not the heart, lungs, stomach or any of them.
Its not a major problem unless you dont treat it and control it ( with meds or surgery, what the doctor and you decide on).

(hyperthyroid is very common among cats), but generally speaking, hyperthyroid will make you lose weight, so the medication should just mean that you maintain at normal. My cat's condition got so bad he was emaciated, but the meds made him gain back some of the weight.

HYPOthyroid, on the other hand, would probably make you gain weight.

I agree, this shouldn't be a big deal for you -- meds should have you in fine shape!

that you are not in menapause also. That would be a double whammy
as far as possible weight gain.
I am in full blown, hot flash heaven menapause, getting 30-50 hot flashes a day that are so intense I sometimes get dizzy and want to puke I get soooooo hot, soooo fast
but do not want to take the meds as they cause breast cancer, so I'm opting for herbs and natural hormone creams, which do not seem to be helping yet.
Sad
and yes I have gained some weight, not much but enough I have to wear a bigger size.
My boobs have grown too, which means I had to get new bras. I am a mess with menapsause Sad
I did not expect it to be so bad.

That sounds horrible! I'm 42, but already terrified of menopause, especially hot flashes...

meds for several years - so far, so good. I take Synthroid and my dosage was recently upped after a routine thyroid test. I haven't had any problems with it; occasionally I do forget to take my pill, usually on weekends because I don't keep the same schedule as weekdays, but it's not caused any problems. My mom & one of my sisters had thyroid problems too - it is a common ailment mostly with women and it can be hereditary.

are the latest diagnosis in most doctors offices now. It's like, in a way, a New Age approach for achieving the best overall health. We started seeing a doctor in our old town and myself, my mother, my father and everyone we spoke to that saw him said that he always pushed the thyroid issue wanted to put everyone he saw on thyroid medication for either over active or under active thyroid reasons.

I'd get a second opinion and then make a decision from there.
