My Step Issue - Published in This Week's Miss Manners!

I am cracking up. I sent in a question to Miss Manners about four months ago about an incident at SS16's birthday dinner. It's this week's lead topic on Miss Manners' online column:

Hilarious. I feel so vindicated. In a small way I hope BM reads it -- since she considers herself the utmost authority on manners (and disagreed with our handling of the situation, naturally). But then I know DH will hear no end to the crap if she does. So hopefully she's not a subscriber to Miss Manners!

It's always nice when your feelings are vindicated. Can you mail a copy to BM, no return address?

Hopefully she will read it!

That was a great letter - my goodness you poor thing - I can only imagine how mortified you must have been when she said that to your sister.

That was great.

Perhaps next year your sister should get her nothing. I know that is what I would do. If asked why, by then sd 17, she (your sister) should respond, I only get gifts to people that are grateful and appreciative. Then she can add. I am only being TRUTHFUL.

If ms manners is a step parent, she obviously has a definite clue...
Thanks for sharing.. I would make sure that they read it, whether comes from you or a neighbor.... FUNNY !!

okay not really but this kind of ungrateful, entitled behavior i absolutely hate. AND the dad just sat there and let her act like that and say that! :jawdrop:

I always wonder if the questions are real, or fabricated by the columnist. How neat!

I mean, how unfortunate for SD that her behavior showed up in Miss Manners as a "Don't."

I wonder if anyone showed it to her?

For all the great comments and support! I am still laughing out loud (a day later!). My sister loved it as well. To give the rest of the story ... DH did tell her on the drive home that night that he was extremely disappointed in her behavior, he thought he raised her better, etc. That was when she said the thing about how could saying what she felt be wrong? Of course, she went home and told BM a very skewed version of the story and OF COURSE BM called DH to tell him that we treated SD unfairly, etc. However, I was really proud of DH. He told BM that #1 She was NOT there to witness the incident and therefore is not entitled to tell us how it should have been handled and #2 Told BM "If you had been there, you would have been MORTIFIED at her behavior. So just stop." Eventually my sister and SD healed the relationship somewhat, but I'll be curious to see if anyone buys her actual gifts at Christmas or if she gets a few bucks in a card from my family (they were pretty steamed -- especially my dad).
