How to deal with DH babying skids

TheWicked's picture

If anything I have not babied my bios enough probably. DH thinks the skids are too young to do anything and FEARS I mean FEARS anything happening to them.

Now I am not saying skids should be put in danger or do anything to drawn unwanted attention to themselves. I come from a family of law enforcement and know the dangers.

However, we live in small tight knot community. It is family oriented and all day long there are kids riding their bikes around, kids headed to the school or park to play, and 3 parks within 2 miles of us. Plus, a frozen yogurt shop, a snow cone stand, and a gas station with sodas and snacks.

The speed limit is either 25 or 30 within this radius and people pretty much follow it. In the morning there are lots of joggers and walkers and moms with all the kids on bikes.

So. Skids are not even back from BM yet and DH is FREAKING out about how I am pro skids going places on their bikes. The park, the pool, out for snacks. I say skids get of house, stop fighting, get some MUCH needed exercise and fresh air. DH freaks out! Why would I let them do that?! They will be hit by a car! Break an arm! Get lost! Never come home! Meet bad kids who will chain them up and force bad habits on them!

Uh, my bios have been out and about every day since we moved here. Allowances have been spent on the pool, sodas, snow cones, and bike tires. They leave in the morning, meet friends at the park, play, go to the pool, get snacks, come home for dinner. They are tanned and happy and NOT SITTING IN THE FREAKING HOUSE BEING PETTY!

In DH's defense there is a small part of the road which is somewhat less safe. There is not a sidewalk or very much shoulder. It is about half a city block. If the skid is not a dumbass they can navigate a very straight path watching for traffic.

Sorry, that would help! Both boys one 12 and one 10. 10yo is young for his age but 12yo is responsible enough to watch out for him. Also, I think 10yo needs to start learning to take care of himself and not completely rely on 12yo.

wth was I thinking's picture

I would have lost my mind at 10 if I'd been constantly cooped up indoors, let alone 12! We lived on our bikes. The mall, the park, the pool, friends' houses, everywhere. My skids are the same way as yours, they (and DH) are afraid for them to even go play alone outside in the big grassy area in the middle of the apartment complex, that you can see from our damn couch....

Aw hell. Get them all ponies. When I was that age my Mom would send me to the barn to do chores, then I would saddle my pony and go ride all day. We traveled miles. No cell phone, no helmet. Be home by dusk for dinner.

I don't think the world is any less safe than it was when we were kids. It's just reported more now.
