OT Rant(ish) BS3stb4 is too smart for public preschool

So here in MO public preschool is not for everyone. There are 32 spots at the elementary school and you have to have your kid screened to get in. The 32 spots go to the kids that need it the most. I get this and I agree with it. Those kids need the help to get ready for kindergarten. (some of them because their parents just plop them in front of a tv) But I'm still peeved that he won't get a spot. BS3stb4 tested way high. When I first saw his score of 65 I was thinking it was bad... but the screener said 'no, we have kids that score a 1'. She said he was way high for his age. The only thing he needs help in is holding a pencil and drawing shapes. So we will start working on that more.

We can't afford to send him to private preschool. So I guess he will just stay at his daycare for another year. It's nice to know that the work we do with him at home has paid off. And we don't do anything spectacular.. just the stuff that parents are supposed to do. We read to him and play games that make learning fun. Plus the small home day care does some educational stuff with the older kids but it's just one lady.

I just really wanted him to do preschool because I feel it's good for all kids... even the smart ones. And maybe it's good for the kids that need help to be around some of the smart kids too?

Does the daycare you take your BS to have a preschool? Or is it an in home day care?

DH put SS3 in preschool so he could have friends and get to play with other kids in a learning environment. It's only half a day but he loves it and he can already write his name with a little help. Before we were doing all the learning games and flash cards at home. I love preschool I think it helps so much with social skills. Any chance you can find another one in your area?

Check to see if any of the day cares in your area have PreK programs. We have free universal PreK for all NYC 4 years. The programs are in public schools and day care centers. The PreK teachers in day cares have the same degrees and licenses as the teachers in the public schools.

It's a home daycare and at this point I think I will just leave him. He's doing well there and has friends. I was going to move him if he got into preschool but since he didn't... it's more the fact that we pay taxes for the schools and don't get to use this part of it.

Sure Sueu2.. any advice is appreciated. He's not reading yet but he's at the point where he will 'read' the book to you from memory. And then he makes up part of the story based on the pictures.

hey purple - sue is right. my father had my brother and i reading and writing before kindergarten. and we had NO daycare or preschool, just a babysitter, and it was not her job to teach.

sounds like so far your son is educationally doing much much better than he could do in a public preschool.
