Starting my "nest egg".

MamaFox's picture

Informed FDH not to rely on my tax return for next year, that it will be going into an account in my name that he will not -Ever- have access to. He asked why and I simply stated I will never turn into either of my Grandmothers (God rest their souls), My aunt (56 years old, no education outside of HS, no job in 20+ years, and recently divorced) or His Mother (Also divorced and while she is a sweet lady, also has no prospects or a way to support herself besides the meager disability check she gets monthly)....I will never put myself in that situation.

He agreed, I then asked him to do the same and start his own nest egg apart from our shared resources. I even THEN asked him if he would be willing to sign a Pre-nup agreeing to the above mentioned stipulations.

He said yes.

I'm trying my best to be smart about this, am I going about this the right way? Or instead of savings do I need to do like a Roth IRA or CD or?

Iknow it's a smart choice, but also, it's my slightly paranoid way of making sure I will NEVER EVER EVER, be in the same situations some of our other dear SMs on here are or were in.

Seriously, some of this shit is TERRIFYING to my not-quite-30yrld brain.

You need term life insurance and a mutual fund. Why would you buy a whole life policy and borrow from yourself to pay yourself back? The difference between what you'd pay for a whole life policy and a term life policy would fund your mutual fund. As an example: A whole life policy might cost you $100 a month, a term life policy might cost you $25 a month. Pay the term life and put the difference into a mutual fund.

Educate yourself when it comes to insurance.

Happy Birthday! Smile

Excellent idea! Talk to a financial advisor. You might want to split up the money that you were going to put in savings and put part of it in an actual retirement account and the other part in savings.
