Procrastination!
I am totally procrastinating the chore of going into the twins' room to organize and purge. I told them twice before they left to go back with BM that they needed to do so themselves...and that if they didn't finish, I would be finishing the job for them, and they may not be happy with how I did it...needless to say they did not complete the task. DS and DD did their own rooms yesterday; DD asked for minimal help from me and DS was thorough- done in an hour. His room looks great and he- gasp- knows where his belongings are and has a system!
These boys are 8 and don't appear to value any belongings or desire to be accountable for any of them. They'd rather wander around the house saying, "Daaaaad, where's my ___________? Daaaaaad, where's my ________________?".
I can't just shut the door and ignore the mess because the dog's princess bed is in with them. She frequently goes downstairs to sleep if the baby wakes up and cries.
No solution, as these two seem incapable of caring or wanting to empower themselves or be independent where taking care of their belongings is concerned.....just a vent.

My suggestion is to get some
My suggestion is to get some boxes and pack it up and put it in the garage or storage and when they come back use it as a reward system to get their stuff back. Did that one time with BS17 and he was so stressed about it. He worked hard to get his things back. Now at 17 my issue is keeping his closet clean, but since the rest of the room is pretty clean, I back off about that.
Oooh I like that- earn them
Oooh I like that- earn them back! I mean....they just seemingly DO NOT CARE about their stuff or have any idea that THEY, yes THEY can be the ones to know where their things are, etc. I have put everything tidily in labeled boxes under their beds, snug as bugs and neat as can be. If I were them I would feel so good, safe, loved when I came home and saw that. But alas, I'm not an eight-year-old boy and they will probably feel grossed out at the lack of mess, lol. Jsmom, that will be my next step if this doesn't work!!! Thank you!
I have to respectfully
I have to respectfully disagree with Jsmom and the OP. DON'T CLEAN THE ROOM! DON'T TELL THEM TO CLEAN THEIR ROOM! Let your husband parent his own children - and if he fails to do so - then let him feel the consequence of having to help them find things when they are "lost".
I don't think your dog will mind the mess
