So..SD basically you are going to work no where
SD is turning 16 in a month......We are now in the home stretch.
SD has decided she wants to get a job for the summer. Ok cool..we told her that we would help get her to and from if she does.
Except....she has some specific requirements..
1. She will not work with food.
2. She will not work anywhere her friends might see her
3. She doesn't want to work with kids
4. She won't work anywhere that smells like old people.
So basically SD will work NO where. Ugh...so frustrating. One job a I sent SD was perfect..outside all day the local pool at the concession stand (bascially ice cream, drinks and candy). Nope...might have to deal with food and she might see someone she knows. Ok then...however, DD who is looking for just something part time in the summer while she studies for her first actuarial exam in the fall, applied. DD was like..hey its outside, its close, its not that hard...and they pay well...heck yea.
I told DH, nope I'm done looking. I told SD I would look for jobs, and I did. Another kid that thinks they will make 100k at a part time job that requires no work.

My son turned 16 in January.
My son turned 16 in January. He had until April 15th to find a job because that is when he can legally drive. There was no question about IF he would work.
He got hired at the grocery store that is like a mile from our house. PERFECT! Min wage is $11/hr (I made that same amount fresh out of college with a Bachelor's!) and he is guaranteed 12 hrs a week but can have up to 20. That is all a teen needs to work, but he can pay $100/mo for his portion of insurance and have gas and fun money.
When he first got hired he had a total freak out. I think he was afraid everyone would see him. It's the the store that is walkable from the high school. He was freaking- right up until he figured out that 1/2 the staff was people from school. They rely heavily on teenagers/early 20's crowd. We told him to give it 30 days and if he was miserable at least he would have some job history to put on his application- no experience means no demands when looking for a job! He is a few weeks in and loves it.
If I was you, I would tell SD that she doesn't get to be picky. Also, that she WILL get a summer job, period. I think too many kids rely on their parents to pay their way into their 20's now. I can't imagine and I refuse to let my kids have that mindset.
This!
100% agree with everything you said. I have friends who didn't make their kids get jobs and they are regretting that now as their 19/22yr olds are bleeding them dry because they have no work ethic or idea of the challenges of a real job and expect their parents to still support them.
I let DH know about her "requirements"
and he was like...uh NO...and he will sit down and talk to her. DH was like WTH..the pool job was the job to have when he was a kid and same for me. He was like, what does she think she is going to be a CEO at 16.
Now...we don't push the job or driving yet as she has ADHD and honestly she isn't all that mature..she is about a few years behind her peers I would say.
I on the other hand am done with the whole thing, I did what I said I would..not my circus not my monkey.
My DD19 will be home from the
My DD19 will be home from the US at the end of May and looking for a summer job. The only limitation is "no fast food". Last year, she was at uni full-time and putting in 24h/week at McDonalds. If she sasy no more fast food work, then that is fine by me.
At least she has tried it
At least she has tried it though! SS15 worked at McDonalds for a year and it was great experience. He also learned the challenges those employees deal with and it was a great lesson in how to treat fast food employees.
I'm sorry, I know it's not
I'm sorry, I know it's not funny. But I laughed out loud at "anywhere her friends might see her." What?! The best part about having a job as a teenager is working WITH friends or somewhere your friends can hang out. Silly girl doesn't know what she's missing out on.
I have a 40 yr old sd.
Who thinks she deserves six figures as well. Took unemployment at the prime time (Extra $) and once that ran out hasn't worked since(coming on 18 months) . Family "helps" her out. It's bizarre.
Yes do not job hunt for her but also get your DH to agree to not subsidize her not working otherwise she will be like my SD.
NO problem on DH helping SD out...
DH is very very good at boundries where that is concerned. If anything I'm the softy around that sort of thing.. DH got burned with GWR aka SS and SD unfortunately doesn't get all the cushy perks that GWR did since GWR took it for granted.
My DH is yet to be firm.
Although he is getting there, especially after the last year of this SD asking for $ then claiming he never helps her. She pulled a good one for her birthday asking for 5x what he usually gifts them. He refused and she guilt tripped him claiming he "rain checked" her birthday, this would be very out of character for my DH and I know he met up with her for lunch and I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have given her birthday cash. I told him no more actual cash gifts for birthdays, Venmo or cash app from here on out to have documentation.
If she passes, which is unlikely at best
being an actuary will chew this lazy upity kid up and spit her out.
:) DD is currently in undergrade
for actuarial science and math major and a data science minor. She currently attends one of the top actuarial science schools in the country. She loves it...the test she is taking in the fall is the first of the 6 tests for actuarial science. I think she will pass this one....but this summer will be dedicated to studying for it.
I hope she passes. The middle daughter of a good friend of mine
worked as an actuary after completing her BS in Mathematics and could never pass the final test for her Actuary license/cert or whatever passing the test would have resulted in.
Good Gawd
SD sounds like a snotty lil B.
What stuck out at me is she doesnt want a job where she will have to be nurturing, kids and elders. What the F is wrong with these type of teens. I get that for some working with kids or elderly is not for them and its good they dont even try. But the smelly old people comment made me sick. One day the princess will be old and smelly so STFU. Learn some respect for your elders. That doesnt mean you have to work with them but that comment got me boiled...
Sorry that got to me. My ex SD was the same and I was horrified by it.
She doesnt want to work where people she knows will see her. That should be her biggest problemo in life. Just WOW
Tell me
What do old people smell like?
Yea I asked the same thing...and all I can gather is
from what she said was...its perfume that isn't from Bath and Body works or Victoria Secrets.
I don't know...all I could do was arch my eye brow and shake my head.
In my head, however, was a whole host of curse words.
I will say this...the crap that SD spews sounds just like Beaver
from what I am told. I had to teach the skids it was inappropriate to yell..EWWW YUCK or THAT LOOKS YUCKY when presented with food they didn't know. Apparently that is a thing that Beaver does...I and my two kids were HORRIFIED the first time the skids did that one
SD15/16 B/M
Told me a month ago how she was excited to get a job. But it has to be walking distance from school. And she wants her weekends to herself and her summer off. egads. All these requirements.
Ha..yes...sounds like SD...
by our house, no weekends or nights, can't be with food, can't be with kids, can't be anywhere her friends might see her and can't smell like old people.
I think we have the same SD...
Lifeguard
Lifeguard? My sis really enjoyed that job when she was a teen. You also get to learn CPR and water rescue, which might make her feel important. Its the perfect "too cool for school" girl job. Just an idea to get her out of your house for awhile. He he.
Uh..that would be at the pool and her friends might see her
plus although SD can "swim" not sure she could pass the lifeguard test, the treading water would be an issue. PLus the ADHD....she is the epitomy of Dug the dog from up....SQUIRREL....and off she goes. That was why I suggested the concession stand position rather than life guard.
Well that's limiting. LOL.
Well that's limiting. LOL.
Food is so easy if it's one thing like an ice cream shop or something. I worked at a small, local fast food place for over a year in high school and loved it. I got to see people and talking with them was actually fun.
What about a temp office job or something for her? Or would that be "too many old people?"
She actually needs to work to see reality. Which is what I think about my YSD but she'll never work either.
I tried to tell her..
the pool concession stand...you hand out ice cream drinks and candy. That's about it...not like its fast food or something. Nope..
Office job..I thought about that......might be too many old people. LOL
Is her objection to food in
Is her objection to food in general or only already-prepared food? My first job was as a cashier at a grocery store. My friends didn't do much grocery shopping, and it was a pretty easy job compared to my friends who were digging ditches.
Requirements
I would nix on those "requirements" as "preferences" and say "get a job by x date after school has ended and summer starts".
That's DH's circus to wrangle..
not my circus not my monkey..I was just trying to give options.
Lloyd Dobler :" I don't want
Lloyd Dobler :" I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that."
If you know you know, this is all I could think of lol.
I am really proud of my two
I am really proud of my two boys, who are now adults.
My older son, when he was at university, had a part time job every Saturday and Sunday at KFC...he didn't enjoy it but he stuck at it for two years. In the holidays he worked for a relative in a factory, it was hot and dusty work but again he stuck at it.
My younger son had jobs at Burger King, a bookshop, and waiter at a restaurant when he went through university.
But the work ethic was instilled in them by their Dad and I from a young age.
As someone said, I just don't understand these parents who pay for EVERYTHING for their kids, so the kids never learn about earning money, and always have their hands out for more.
You reap what you sow.
