Chanel No. 5

We did some Christmas shopping today and I suggested perfume for SD12. In my head that meant an age appropriate gift set like this Ariana Grande one that came with a sleep mask, and SD loves these sleep masks for some reason. What did my DH do? He walked right past the kids perfumes, lotions and sprays and bought a big bottle of Chanel no 5. For a 12 year old. Not even the eau de toilette... Eau de parufme!! 

And he wonders why she's entitled?? I can't wait for her to come over after she's bathed in the full strength Chanel.

WTH?? Why on earth would he buy an ADULT perfume for a pre-teen? Please tell me he is completely clueless. Did you try to steer him towards a more appropriate perfume?

At least I got the Issey Miyake that I wanted.

She is going to hate it.  That is not a perfume that a 12 year old will find appealing in the slightest.  And should she even open the bottle and try it on, anyone who smells it on her is going to do a double-take.  Is he also going to dress her in a tweed suit and strand of pearls? Maybe a little black dress?   LOL

It may be a classic, but it is an “old person’s perfume” IMO, certainly not suitable for a child. 

Who is DH trying to impress?

Certainly not SD.

And certainly it wasn’t you, so maybe the shop assistant was , thinking he was getting Granny a gift.

I think the picked it thinking it was the most prestigious perfume there? She can't hate it if it's the most expensive!

It was made famous by Marilyn Monroe in an interview in the 60's.  She was asked something to the effect of "what do you wear to bed?" and she answered "Chanel No. 5."  That set off a craze for it and made it a classic for "women of a certain age."  Needless to say, that age is not 12!  (facepalm)

There are now at least 10 different iterations of Chanel perfumes and some are much lighter than the very heavy oriental scent of No 5 but none are suitable for children.

I think everyone's mother did.  It was "the thing" for Saturday night out.  A room full of ladies wearing it will clear your sinuses.  I have Chanel Mademoiselle that I was given as a gift and even that is room-clearing unless you are VERY careful with it.  The first time I put it on I sprayed a normal amount and after half an hour it was still so strong I had to take a shower!

I had a tiny sample bottle of chanel mademoiselle and it lasted me months because it was so instense.

OH nooooooooooo not Chanel No 5.  For a 12 year old.  Maybe Sweet Honesty from Avon Wink

She will hate it. My goodness this fragrance is for a mature woman. My Mothers favorite (RIP mom)

If you were given Chanel No 5 it was a very big deal back in the day. Certainly not from a Father to his 12 year old daughter...ewwwww

HEY OP---will he sit for you to read some of our responses? Mine would LOL

IF he is hell bent on buying his 12 year old a fragrance (ewww)---look into the colonge "Inis"... you can google it. Light, flower very pretty scent from Ireland. It is my day time scent.  Everyone loves it.

Dads DO NOT BUY their daughters perfume....something eww about that.

I suggested Clinique Happy or Marc Jacobs Daisy since he shot down the Arianna Grande Gift set designed for tweens. For kids it's more about the  bottle and a sweet candy scent.

I wore Sweet Honesty in High school and in my early 20's. Avon started carrying it again a few years ago and I bought some just for the nostalgia factor. It is amazing how scent can evoke memories.

Well, sounds like everyone is agreed that your DH is clueless.  I like Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, and have had it in my rotation since I was an older teen, but I wouldn't wear Chanel No. 5 now, let alone when I was a young teen or tween.  It has old lady written all over it.  As a teen, I also liked Viva La Juicy, Marc Jacobs' Daisy and one of the Abercrombie perfumes (I forget which one).  Your SD is NOT going to like Chanel No. 5.  What a waste.   Oh, and I'll bet that even though he chose a perfume you told him wasn't appropriate and ignored your suggestions, YOU will be blamed for this gift fail, because you're the one who suggested perfume.

Ewww so now she can smell like an old lady fart?  Sorry to anybody who likes Chanel no5, but I just can't stand the smell of it.

That's so weird that's sets a very bad precedent for sure. My bf daughters 10 & 12 now demand new cell phones every Christmas and he gets them this year the both want iPhone 11  I keep telling him he is setting unrealistic expectations for them. He is trying to buy their love and they treat him like total crap
