O/T My Daughter-In-Law To Be Is Shopping for Wedding Dresses--Advice Needed

thinkthrice's picture

Needless to say they are quite pricey. Now her parents are well-to-do and have offered to pay for the whole thing, but she has mentioned that they are the type to have strings attached in the end. I have also offered to help but she and my son want to be as independent as possible and not have an elaborate, pricey wedding.

Any suggestions of where any of you STalkers got a good deal on wedding attire?

Ha, the last time I did sewing was outfits for my daughter, who at the time was around two years old (she's 33 now)

Oh they are saving in all other arenas as well. They are getting married on the base so that's a savings. They are also doing a collection of cakes (with wedding emblems) as opposed to one "wedding" cake which is actually less expensive.

She likes the Stella York line.

i got mine at david's bridal. one at the store for 400 + alterations from a friend, the other online for 150.00- no alterations needed.

i got a lot of our stuff at hobby lobby on sale (pretty invitations, cute little tins for favors, the serving set for the cake, my veil, some flowers/vases, etc) and a some stuff at the dollar tree (bows for chairs, candles for the tables, pretty goblets to drink from).

dh just wore a black pinstriped suit he already had, with shirt/satin tie in my color choice. the kids wore white button-downs and khakis.

we had the ceremony in my In-Law's yard, and the reception at the church (the pastor offered it). low key, but beautiful.

this was actually our second wedding - held a ceremony on our first anniversary to include friends and family. our actual wedding was just he and i at a tiny chapel in the mountains Blum 3

If she doesn't mine a "used once" wedding dress, I would check out Tradesy: https://www.tradesy.com/

I almost got one from there, but ended up buying one I loved at a store. My dress and veil together were $1,800, and alterations were another $375.

One thing a friend told me was it is cheaper if you take a drive out to the boonies and go to a bridal shop there. People in "the city" will spend more than someone out in a small town, so the small town shops have better prices. I didn't follow that because I'm lazy, lol, but could be worth a shot!

one more thing, u can check out their "sample sale", some beautiful dresses there too.

She is a very traditional/conservative/demure type girl. She likes somewhat A line dresses (I've noticed the style right now is kind of like form fitting and then a flare at the mid thigh).

She's not into satin and doesn't like large prints/flashy. She does like lace. She's a size 6-8 and about 5' 3" tall. She plans on wearing flats or a small heel.

I found the dress I wanted online, tried it on at a store that had it in stock, then started the long tedious task of calling around to find the cheapest price. I found a 1000.00 custom made dress, and found a retailer that was selling it for 850.00, plus if you went to the Wedding Show in town, you got a coupon for 100.00 off your dress order so it cost me 750.00.
sometimes knowing EXACTLY the dress you want, then shopping for it helps, in my case it did.

I found a gorgeous dress online and then went to a bridal shop to try various styles.
I discovered the style of dress that I thought was perfect looks awful on me.
I then found a dream dress, but the cost of it was more than the rest of the wedding! Expensive tastes huh? So what have I done? Ive been looking online and managed to find a very similar dress at a fraction of the price.
The dress will be bought online, and will not be bought till next year so cant comment as to whether or not it will work out but it better!

So yeah, tell her to go to the shops to find the right style before she goes worrying about how much the dress will be.

She's advance shopping. She turned down the cash so far. Their wedding isn't until July 2016.
