OT - my kids high school was closed today due to a weapons threat

secret's picture

Got an email this morning from school staff indicating the school would be closed due to a weapons threat...

Cops arrested someone in relation earlier today, school stayed closed.

There has been SUCH an increase in criminal activity in the last year or so... ridiculous.

I remember in college I got a text from my little bro saying they were under lock-down due to a threat (naturally he wasn't supposed to be texting and decided to chat with me... I appreciated the updates... But was a bit annoyed he wasn't following procedure on this...) Freaked me out... They arrested someone and ended lock-down... For "terrorist threats" (they didn't actually have anything, just made threats thinking it would be funny)...

It's scary when stuff like that happens... Even scarier when it could be an actual thing going on

Back in the 80's we had a few bomb threats a year at our HS. Usually rooted in kids not wanting to take an exam, but when you live on a military base in a foreign country, they take them all seriously.

Oh wow. I remember being in elementary school in the 70's and our school got a bomb threat. It was deep in winter and we packed into school buses in the parking lot and froze for a few hours. No clue why they didn't turn on bus for heat or send us home.

I think a BIG part of this is the glorification we give to the criminal. Think about it. There's a good chance this kids name will be plastered all over the place. That's attention be it negative.

The school should expel the student and they should face legal consequences / therapeutic involvement. The ONLY thing put on the news should be "school was shut down due to X item being found (whatever). Students returned back safety at X time." NOTHING should be said about the kid who did it other than "they are being dealt with."

I know this isn't the same but experts have said this over and over again about school shootings and attacks. Do NOT glorify the attacker. Don't even say their name. Don't make it national news or even special coverage. Focus on the victims and future plans on how to keep people safe.

It has to be a minor, because no name was released in the news. It doesn't say it was a student.

The arrest was made early this morning, the school decided to keep it closed.

Update - another article specifies "a 19 year old man"

Could be a student. Dunno. Doesn't mention name.

I work at a High School, we just had a training last week about these types of scenarios, heard all the statistics, it is really scary. I can happen ANYWHERE, doesn't matter how big or small your town is, it crosses socio-economic lines, race, gender, etc. We spent time looking at prevention, and none of us could come up with a solid, feasible way to stop these things from happening. Of course there were lots of great suggestions, and things that we have implemented to help, but there are just so many factors that go into these tragedy's. I agree with the previous posters though, there need to be consequences, we need to stop glorifying criminal behavior, and we need to stop making these criminals into celebrities.

IMHO Smile

I just don't get it, where does these kids get weapons from? Why is it not locked away if their parents have a gun?

I grew up in war time, thus bomb threats was nothing, not a week passed where we did not have to leave the school and wait out a search...

but luckily my kid grew up with nothing like this,

We have a large high Hell's Angels population in the surrounding areas, my guess is from there. *shrugs*
