My country stands for freedom-including of speech

SO-I have copied and pasted my thoughts on someone's blog because they have blocked me from responding. And that is there right Smile
Here's why I completely disagree with the "if you don't like it leave my country" pov..for one it seems to go hand in hand with people who's mindset is "agree with me or else" and "I cannot respect others point of view or opinions". It's correlates with the black/white mentality. No shade of grey allowed.

But here's what I have to say about it:

I'm not sure which child abuse laws are even referred to exactly that people dislike...as I didn't see anyone defending child abuse.

But I must say the "if you don't like our country and it's laws leave" crowd....always promotes an immediate reaction/response from me, for many reasons. And I guess I then get deleted because I make sense Wink

Because on the same token-as citizens of a free/democractic country-citizens have the right, obligation to call for reform to laws, critique them, draw attention and challenge laws. To challenge those that claim to represent us. It's not about leaving at all...I believe that to be overly simplistic, complacent and unhelpful. Many revolutionaries fought laws they found were unfair, overeaching, unclear. Including our immigrants and founding fathers.

Example of unfair laws IMO-a "statutory rape" charge will mark the "offender" as a sexual predator for life-with all the implications that has. Even if it was a 17-18yr old boy/girl having consensual sex w/their bf/gf (depending on state laws0-which vary). There is no allowance because the law is overreaching. Many people DO fight to reform this, and they have every right to NOT want to be placed in the same category as a pedophile, rapist, predator. I respect their civil liberty to have a negative opinion on this law and to fight to have this modified. They shoudln't have to "leave" if they don't like the laws...the law is their supposedly to "protect it's citizens' not run our lives-the gvmnt is here for us-not US for the gvmnt to conform to their never ending list of rules.

We didn't become this regulated/legistlated over night...it happens when people get complacent and allow lawyers, and politicians w/special interests to propose new legislation everytime they fart (or more). We forget that "laws" are introduced by human beings-CITIZENS, just as we are. They are imperfect, often times unfair, over reaching, violate civil liberties.

They get voted on...many times our legislators don't abide by their citizens interests. As someone who is somewhat libertarian leaning I abhor the amount of laws in place that legislate/regulate us to death. From private establishment rights, to custody reform needed, etc.
How on earth did we get to soo many idiotic laws to begin with? I'm talking generalized here-not specific child abuse laws.
As the great Ben Franklin said: "He who gives up freedom for safety, deserves neither".

This wondeful countries founding fathers would turn in their graves if they saw how much freedom we've lost, how all in the name of "citizen safety" we've given up rights, liberties, speech, and burried our head in the sand as it happens. How we sat their and took it and "accepted it" because....well the law and gvmnt knows best. Or...if you don't like it leave.

As a citizen if I oppose a law or think it's stupid-I'm not only free to voice an opinion, to criticize it, I have IMO an obligation to do so and to speak out to those that will listen and call for reform and talk to our representatives.

There are obvious laws against violence that protect us-but some things that should have entirely been personal decisions are now handcuffed into not having any freedom, personal responsibility or capability of making decisions for the good of you and your family. I think it is an extremely sad time in our country to see everything we stood for, trampled, and worse, see people just throwing their hands up and conforming to the norms.

Let's let the state and fed gvmnt run our lives-we are completely incapable of doing so ourselves. Hand it over.
Just as so many women here tend to abhor gvmnts involvement in CSupport..so shoudl we suggest they just leave the country if they don't like the laws?

Can they not cry out for reform-in this nation where the loved ones, family, friends live...do they have to shut up and take or leave, are those our options as American citizens??

What if our ancestors did that when they came here instead of fighting for reform. LEGAL immigrants have EVERY right to have opinions (by the way I personally am a born American citizen).

To fight for reform, to speak out against laws, losses of liberties, injustices.

There is no one American universal 'way of life', part of the beauty of living in this country is that people are free to live as they want, culturally, religion wise, customs, etc. We have immigrants from all over the world, they are free to live as they want, they are free to call for reform, they are free to criticize what they see wrong and to work to change what is unfair. It's like arguing against what MAKES us America!! Falls way short on the logic stick.
