Im a non believer... but things are getting creepy

Ok Steptalkers I have a quandary that I am in that is far from the normal BM drama. DH and I live on post--we moved to our current house back in October. I am a very logical thinker.. I don't believe in scary stuff, a house makes noises--it's normal, and I can usually find a practical explanation for everything. Except this.

October 2016- We just moved in, the kids are with their BM cause we don't have furniture yet. The first night in the new house. All bedrooms are on the second floor, the whole downstairs is wood floor or tile and the stairs are wood as well. Somewhere around 2 AM I hear footsteps down the stairs leading into the kitchen. I sleepily get up to find out what SS is trying to eat in the middle of the night and get halfway down the stairs before I realize we don't have the kids tonight. UMMMM ok--guess I dreamed it, I go back to sleep no issue.

January 2017- DH is away on business and I don't have the kids all weekend so I FINALLY get a day to sleep in. Wahooo! Saturday at 7 AM: SD's stand and play table starts playing music by itself. And will not stop. Ok, check the dog--he might have hit a button. No, said dog is curled up next to me in bed. OK go downstairs and check if something fell on it. Its still playing music as I come downstairs--nothing has fallen or hit it. I have no rational explanation other than the toy is malfunctioning. I take the batteries out and problem is solved.

Later January 2017- SS starts complaining he doesn't like being in his room. Won't say why. I have gotten up to pee in the middle of the night multiple times to find him asleep in the hallway--he legit moved his blanket and pillow to the hallway to sleep.

February 2017- DH is snoring so extremely bad I cannot fall asleep. Fine, we don't have the kids tonight, I will go sleep in SS's room. Trying to fall asleep and I could swear I hear children whispering and giggling. Thinking that I am sleep deprived I give up and go back to my own bed.. and have nightmares the whole night about children's hands trying to grab me. Ok no biggie.. I haven't been sleeping.

March-May 2017- various sounds I can't explain. The dog keeps barking at nothing. I have no rational explanation other than we are just on edge and need to chill out. There is no such thing as haunted houses.

Last night June 2017: 2 AM ish...I bolt out of bed and run to SS's room after hearing him scream "Help me daddy help me" I am almost to his room before I realize DH is right behind me and we both stop at SS's door and realize again.. we don't have the kids tonight. I asked DH "why did you get up to follow me?" He said " I wasn't following you.. I heard Help me Daddy and I was running to check on son". I could have passed this off as a bad dream but DH heard the same thing I did and thought the same thing.. Kid is in trouble and screaming for help. I have no idea what to make of all this.. a little.. no make that A LOT out of my element here. Maybe ask SS in detail why he doesn't like his room??

I have heard of that before-- never really believed in all of this. What exactly entails getting it saged?

I'm with you. I've seen things with my own eyes and I know there are spirits, but I don't believe they were ever people. I will never, ever forget the black thing that used to creep into my room at night when I was a teen. Or the horrifying, garbled, growled language shouted from my brother's room when I was home alone. Or the hundreds of other little things. The man in black stopped from entering the room by a golden wing slamming down. The peace in the room while that wing was visible. The absolute terror of the house shaking and doors slamming when I was home alone.

I'm going to stop now before I dredge up the worst memories. I am a Christian and I believe wholly in Him. But I believe there are spirits who would masquerade as a dead human to damage/terrify the living. I did a few things in my childhood home and in my current home to defend the home and those within it. Just like BrightFuture, I'd be willing to share if you're interested and message me.

How far away is the nearest neighbor? Is it possible that if a neighbor's child cried out loud enough (with an open window, perhaps) you would hear it?

Same with sounds on stairs ... could it be a neighbor coming home after late shift, stomping up stairway loud enough that you could hear it? That may explain why two of these instances were happening around the same time - 2 a.m.ish.

Otherwise, the other incidents can be coincidental. Not unusual that a child who is in a "new" home may not be comfortable in their room at first. He may want to sleep in the hall because he feels closer to his dad and you.

And electronics are known to often have a "life" of their own and do crazy, unexplicable things.

danielsj2's picture

Yep I have thought all of these things too. Our connecting house (neighbor has been vacant since we moved in). So I can cross that out. I suppose I could hear the non connecting neighbors house, but I highly doubt it would be that loud and their kids are teens not small children. And SS has not given specifics on why he doesn't like his room. I just chalked it up to he is young and the house is new so he isn't used to it yet so I haven't really pressed the issue. But I find him sleeping in the hall at least twice a week.

DH says he has been having a problem with sleep paralysis sometimes.. trying to wake up but cannot move or speak. I asked why he hasn't said something and he told me he didn't really think anything of it.

danielsj2's picture

Agree... DH found a forum online that apparently people have been experiencing that kin don this on this post dating back all the way to the 70s. A few people said they moved three or more times on post before finally moving off post entirely.

I have a similar story.

July 2016 move into new house: 5 kids DH and myself with two aged dogs.
Sept. 2016 hear footsteps walking upstairs, everyone is at school and DH is working in the garage. I ignore it, thinking house is creaking.

October 2016. DH and I are in the bedroom and I just gave SS4 his lunch downstairs at the table. Everyone else is at school. I hear SS4 come running up the stairs to in front of my room, I open the door, expecting to see SS4.... nobody there. I call out SS4 why aren't you eating your lunch, he calls from downstairs at the table. I'm at the table eating my lunch Mom!!

Dec. 2016. Hubby comes upstairs late from working in the garage, hears kids giggling. Check all the kids, everyone asleep.

May 2017. I'm taking a bath and hubby is brushing his teeth and the bathroom door shuts very quickly. All on its OOOWWWNNNN!!!

I never thought these things were real either but DH and I both heard and saw these things.

OMG that is creepy. I don't think I have seen doors open or close.. but I think I am so fixated on "this isn't real" I dismiss a lot. SD is very young so her attention span is easily thwarted but there have been many times she runs around giggling trying to grab something that isn't there. I just chalked it up to a young girl's imagination and I am happy she is entertaining herself. Whatever "it" is.. I def think it has to be a child... everything revolves around the kid's toys or rooms.. somehow it is always points back to something to do with the kids.

We couldn't go back to sleep last night.. I can still hear that voice saying "help me Daddy Help me" it was super scared and we both heard it plain as day.

I would be just as traumatized as that woman!! that's horrible!

I'm also a believer. I grew up next door to a funeral home. I saw and heard some weird stuff as a kid. I can't tell you how to get rid of it. We did the sage thing. It helped for a while.

I had similar experiences many, many years ago in my sisters very old house. I'd be baby sitting and would hear sounds at night when the kids were supposed to be sleeping.

Their cat was sitting on the back of a sofa staring into a back room and it started to follow something with it's eyes. I couldn't see what it was so I thought it might be a fly. Then the creaking sound as if someone was walking up the stairs, the cats eyes following the noise. I then hear kids laughing and giggling and running back and forth along the upstairs hallway. I called up to the kids to go back to bed. No response, so I went up to check on them. Kids were sound asleep. I went back downstairs and went back to reading my book and watching TV. I heard the stairs creak again. The cat looked up and started following something to the back room that I couldn't see myself. After staring into the back room for a moment, the cat jumped down from the back of the sofa and went up stairs...

The house was in the country, no nearby neighbours.

I don't really believe in the paranormal, but so many things happened over my life time that makes me question if there is something more to this life or something more out there...

My aunt and uncle stained and then shellacked the floors in their 100 year old house.
He would paint himself up the stairs each evening, they had a back set of stairs if they needed to get out.

They came downstairs in the morning after it was all finished to find a woman's high heeled footprints in the shellac. They went from the kitchen across the dinning and living rooms and up the stairs.
They didn't match any of the shoes in the house.

Creepy.

I don't know how you can't believe if you both heard the same thing.

I am a believer. My grandma comes around and I get a whiff of her perfume and cigarette smoke. Especially if I am really upset.

I don't recommend the ouija board, though!

I would also recommend finding a local psychic. My mom used to be friends with one and she could touch objects and tell you things that happened that no one had told her. She's since passed away, though.

danielsj2's picture

I agree something should be done. I just feel like a loony toon asking for a new house cause ours appears to be haunted. But I am connecting all these dots the more that happens. Last month SD woke up in the middle of the night wailing. This wasn't her usual "im hungry" or "Im wet" cry. It was like she was genuinely terrified. It took us hours to calm her down and get her to go back to sleep. I never found an explanation for that either.

CompletelyPuzzled's picture

You're story about your late husband made me think of something. My grandmother was a huge fan of Christmas. She always told me that she would find ways to let me know that she was watching me. She died about 20 years ago. Five years ago, around Christmas, my mom got a random call from a debt collector. They said they were looking for my grandma. When we called them back, they couldn't find a record of her in their system.

Then two years later, I got a call where the caller used a caller ID spoof. The caller ID said my grandma's name. And, it is not a common name. We also don't have the same last name.

Both of these incidents stuck with me for a long time.

Trust me, the military would not take kindly to anyone "pounding on desks" to get another on-post/base house based on alleged paranormal incidents. And I'm sure a commander would hear about it. Quickly.

The fact of the matter is that trying to get the military bureaucracy to act based on something paranormal would be like pushing a wet noodle up a hill. Unless there are a lot of vacant homes on post, getting moved into another one (which takes taxpayer resources, unless its a DITY move.) Just isn't going to happen because the family is "uncomfortable" and "hears things."

In many places, there are military families on wait-lists to get into post housing. They may be staying in small, temporary lodging quarters until something comes available, which might take months.

So the housing office might just say, "Take it or leave it." about current house. Then you will have to make a choice to stay on post or move off post.

danielsj2's picture

Yup. Pretty much. Even if we could get another house.. we have to pay to move to said new house. The military wouldn't move us like normal. So we either stay and live with it or we pay to move again.

I also have experience working as an investigator, and I did it way before this stuff was trendy. I can pick up objects and tell you about the owner, and a friend that died told me a whole bunch of stuff about himself AFTER he died that turned out to be true that I couldn't have known.

What you are describing, assuming there is no other rational explanation that you may be overlooking, is definitely on the more disruptive side. I have spent a lot of time in a lot of places that are definitely haunted, and actually audibly hearing someone speak (not just a whisper on a tape recording or a voice in your head) has never happened to me. Of course, you and DH were sleeping so you probably both dreamt it or "heard" it between asleep and awake. The possessed electronics are pretty normal and not a big deal. I just keep extra batteries on hand. I have witnessed stuff moving on its own before, but it was a major thing that happened once and was heavily provoked, and not a daily occurrence.

Regardless of whether you have a single weak human spirit or a horde of demons and poltergeists and whatever-- (I have dealt with both) a spirit is just a spirit. It has no real foothold or power in the physical world-- while you do. You have a physical presence, and the physical world belongs to you and yours alone. Their influence is extremely limited, and not only that but they pretty much need your energy to manifest at all. If you don't give it to them, they can't. Just ignore it, it can't harm you. The stuff you are describing is one hell of an Olympic effort for the "ghost." Stop paying attention and he will likely stop trying. Explain this to skids as well. I have done the whole sage thing and found it to be mostly ineffective, it really only quieted the activity for a a few days, didn't remove it. What worked best was ignoring them, they just stopped after a while. While things you cannot see or touch do exist, and yes I believe what you are experiencing may very well be real with no other explanation, they're really nothing but shadows and dust. Nothing to be afraid of, and nothing to get worked up over. You don't need to pay anyone to cleanse your house or exorcise your family and you don't need to move. View it as a curiosity or a point of entertainment, that's all it really is.
