SD3 learning swear words. UGH!

Bcraine's picture

A couple days ago, bf, SD, BIL and MIL went to see other BIL and his family for supper. We drove up to the city and the whole way, MIL was using the word ass in alot of sentences. Once we finishes supper at the BIL's, I start cleaning up SD and she says F*** it. I didn't believe what I thought I heard so I asked her and she said it again. I dealt with SD3 right away and told her it was a bad word and she shouldn't say that. On the way home, MIL continued to swear in her sentences. When we get home, I mention it to BF. Of course, that starts another argument. SD is turning 3 next week, she shouldn't know these words but she is learning them from hearing BF and from the amount of time she spends at MIL's house while we're working. BIL4 also swears alot and MIL does nothing about it. Not sure how to make this stop around SD. BF has gotten a little bit better since we talked but I'm pretty sure he hasn't said anything to MIL or SFIL about it. I know that once we have our own kids they won't spend anytime there if this continues, but this is one more thing that makes me wonder if I can still be with BF.

Any advice? This isn't the first time that she has sworn.

I wish it was as easy as not letting her go over there. I don't have that option because she is our babysitter and she raised SD until I came in so they have The bond that BM didn't get with her. If we could afford a daycare, it would be better I'm sure.

Growing up, I didn't know any cuss words. Not until I was in school and I knew better than to ever say them infront of my family. I want that for my kids.

She will learn that there are things adults do/say that kids can't.

Most kids experiement with words. Some continue for the shock value. Some do it because the adults laugh and let it go. Most stop because they are taught it is wrong.

One time my niece who was just 2 was listening to my sister and I on speakerphone in the car. My sister was relating a conversation she'd had with a boy she was interested in who ticked her off and my sister said "I said 'fuck it' and walked away."

My niece from the backseat pipes in "Fuck it and walt awaaayyy." Kids definitely repeat what they hear.

Another time when she was 3, she told me "Mommy froaked (threw) up in the shower...because she drank too much seers (beers)."

We can't control what other adults say around our kids, and while it's frustrating to hear your sweet little toddler say "fuck it" it's pretty much par for the course, as they repeat EVERYTHING.

I'm finding it's very hard for our DHs to correct their family, so I guess you just have to keep setting a good example and correcting her as you did when she does repeat something grandma said.
