Anyone from NY area-need some suggestions for a day trip.

In midst of all this craziness-thinking of maybe just getting up an taking the kids on a day trip to NY this wknd...no cost to fly and weather seems will be good.

SO with that said-which places would you recommend for being there around 5-6hrs? Cost from LGA to Manhattan in cab or which way to get there?

Was thinking of visiting chinatown/little italy, empire state/times square...(are those all in same area?) maybe even the staten island ferry...are those all in proximity? Been there a few timse but cant remember too much.
What about the natural history museum-what's the distance? What about central park? Visit ground zerp perhaps. Any good link to a good map that shows where the big attractions are in proximity to eachother?

I've been to the highline before also but not sure of distance between all these-trying to find the best way to "circle" and do things in proximity before thinking of cabbing to another area (if we have time)....so any suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance!!!

Cost of a cab is about $35 from the airport. Museum of Natural History is on Upper West Side. Getting around city on the subway is very easy and you can get day passes for unlimited rides. Google NYC subway and see a map.

If nice out you may want to consider Circle line. Takes you all the way around Manhattan.

Circle Line is a boat and there also is the Grey Line which is a bus tour around the city. Dont bother with the Staten Island Ferry.

Chinatown and Little Italy are all the way in the lower tip of Manhattan and are in close proximity to Ground Zero you can walk to all of these areas. Empire State Building is on 34th street, Times Square is 42nd Street you can walk from 34th to 42nd. The Natural History Museum is on 79th Street by Central Park. You'll need a cab from Times Square to go uptown.

THanks-I just found a map also here:

So-thinking of perhaps cabbing to lower manhattan-start by seeing statue of liberty...then covering chinatown/little italy/ground zero. I guess we can then subway to Midtown area for Empire state and Times Square.

From there is there no subway to uptown to the Central Park area or it has to be a cab? Thanks all for teh quick answers.
Earliest we can get there is 11am -so we may not cover enterint the museum but did want to walk around in Cetnral Park a bit if we have time. We can take a flight back around 6 or 7pm...just a backpack for one of us-so we won't have crazy amounts of time.

OH-Another question-where is the Highline in relation to all these? I think it was close to Chelsea...not sure if it's accesible to walk from lower/mid area...?? Can't see it on that one map. THx

They just opened section 2 of the Highline so now I think it goes up to 34th street. It way over on the west side.
