OT- I will be getting an '89 Toyota Corolla to replace my RAV4 that was totalled in May...

It makes me really (really) nervous buying a car that is almost as old as I am! But, I keep trying to convince myself of the positives...

1)for being 21 years old, it only has 87K on it.
2)there is one tiny rust spot on the outside (about the size of a 50 cent piece). The inside is missing one plastic door handle and that's it.
3)I believe that being as old as it is, the frame is made of steel and there is just a lot of metal in it. Very good considering my magnatism for people colliding into me. If I could have afforded it, I would have bought a monster truck ;-P
4)Clean title history. Only two owners.

Here's to hoping this car works out well long term!

I haven't. My DH's dad is really great with cars. He came with us to check it out and thinks it's in pretty good working order. I'm driving a '95 Ford Aspire (assfire) at the moment and he's gotten that hunk of junk to actually be a fairly decent car...especially since it has almost 300,000 miles on it.

No car payment is the way to go! I've been making payments for the last 8 years. It'll be nice to have that extra $200-300 dollars every month!

Im a fan of Toyota. Those things will run forever if you take care of them. No car payment...I think its a good choice.

The way my luck goes I either have a car payment or if it's paid off i'm paying my mechanic an insane amount of money. I bought a 2 year old vehicle that still had warranty and I haven't regretted it yet! I loved my paid off truck, but it was starting to do the nickle and dime routine....I agree - have it looked at by a real mechanic - sometimes they'll do a full inspection for $40. saved my HD on a bad truck!
