O.T Hair dying

TickedOff's picture

this is what SD15's hair look like now http://www.pinterest.com/pin/139893132147893491/ ( no this is not her just the hair syle she coppied). I like the style but the color no. Why? Why does everyone waht to dye their hair the colors of the rainbow I don't get it. I don't think it helps with the dump teen mom steryotype either. I'm not going to put her down. But really? I just don't get it. Someone please enlighten me.

The best dyes for hair colors like that are vegetable based, so, they won't pose any harm.

Most of the dyes from Spencers and Hot Topic are the dyes I'm referencing.

Yea, the dyes they sell are the same dyes my hair stylist uses to give her dog a blue mohawk (which is way more awesome looking than it sounds btw haha).

Thanks! I'm a big ol Knopehead ^_^ And, you're an uber HP fan who is involved with local government? I think I love you haha.

I'm biased. FDH and I both have a long history of 'unnatural' hair colors. I can't speak for FDH but I did it because I liked having my hair different colors. Heck, I have red ombre hair right now that FDH helped me dye using manic panic. And when we were first dating, he helped me put purple streaks in my hair. Heck, FDH's mom got purple streaks put into her hair this past spring - and she's 67.

It's no different than people going to the supermarket or salon and getting their hair dyed a 'natural' color. Some people just prefer pinks, blues, and purples to the brunettes, reds, and blondes. Sure, it can make things rough for some people - SD had a tough time when GUBM made her change schools to a backwoods school because she was literally the only kid with weird colors in her hair - and it can make getting a job difficult (I lucked out, though, I work somewhere where they really don't care about appearance as long as you dress appropriately and don't look like you rolled around in a dirt pile before coming to work). But, realistically, it doesn't hurt anyone and I don't see it as being a huge deal. If it's not your personal preference, that's cool. But if it's your SD's preference, that's cool too. Do good by what you said up there and don't insult her.

I would actually like it a lot more if my SD had her hair more like the picture you shared than it currently is - maybe not the same colors, but, you know, one solid color with a few separate colored streaks. There are awful looking patches of bleached hair with faded teal hair dye. It just looks weird to me. Think Krusty from the Simpsons. But, SD also has extremely curly hair which works against her doing the streaks in her hair, so, I think a whole head color would look better on her.

Hey attempting_to_m... thank you for your comment. Can you tell use how to get the dye off the back of her neck. She got it on the back of her neck the top of her back and her ear and we tried scrubbing it but it won't come off. the pack says permanent and you said you dye your hair all of the time so how do you get permanent dye off of skin? thanks.

Do you know anyone who smokes? If so, ask to borrow their ashtray. I used to use ashes on a wet paper towel to remove dye and it worked like a charm.

Otherwise, you might have to get dye remover from a Sally Beauty or someplace similar - I just don't know how safe that would be if she's pregnant..

Other than that, tell her to use vaseline to coat her ears, neck, and any other exposed skin next time she dyes and just have her scrub those spots a little extra when she showers.

I wish my SD would give up the bleach. Her hair is light enough in color that she could get bold and vibrant colors by leaving the dye on for 12+ hours. And the bleach is just wrecking her hair. She's got baby fine, super curly hair and she hates how frizzy it gets - because GUBM doesn't teach her how to take care of it and she won't listen to me because I'm the devil }:) - but the bleach, ugh, it hurts it even more :/

Yea, I had to learn recently with my hair, too, but that's because it was stick straight for most of my life and it wasn't until I was in my 20s when I realized my hair had turned curly (wavy/s'wavy to be exact) Shok

Heck, SD even stole a copy of my Curly Girl Handbook when we lived in NJ, so you'd think she would read it and teach herself if she's not going to listen to me lol. She's got the best kind of curly hair, too, IMO. All she really needs to do is condition the heck out of it and maybe use some light gel or mousse and that's it :/

I wouldn't pick hair color or style to be the hill I die on. When my son was 10, he asked to get a chartreuse green streak put in his hair. It was 3" wide and went from the front of his head to the back. It looked great. He was happy and then it grew out and that was that. Hair color isn't that serious. Piercings and tattoos I'd be more annoyed about.

Even then, the person who gets the tattoos has to live with them forever lol. And piercings can be closed. But, yea, hair dye, meh, not that big of a deal, unless the dye gets all over the bathroom and then, well, hand them some bleach and a scrub brush lol.

I actually think it's cute. She's young and it's fun. I put hot pink streaks in my DD's hair when she was 8. She loved it. I even had them myself for awhile and if my mom had let me do it as a teen, I would have (except when I was a teen NO ONE but punk weirdos did it so I would have been really out of place). The only thing I hate is what a PITA it is to do. It's not hurting anyone and it's the trend right now. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Although when/if she goes to get a job, she should put it back to natural and wait to see if her employer allows it. She probably won't get a job that way, but some places are ok with it.
