Is my MIL trying to stir the pot?

SweetMom's picture

Today my mil came over to visit, she's retired. It was a beautiful day but when she went home she called us to come by and listen to her answering machine, said it was a lawyer for DH. When we get there the message said his ex wife's name she carries now. I said to her what the hell does that have to do with my husband and she needs to call that lawyer back and tell them that woman hasn't been her daughter n law in 10 years. Dh thought maybe it was a bill they once had together years ago. I said I been with him the last 6 to 7 years and I'm sure statue of limitations would have ran out on that, besides, I check his credit report twice a year. Mil said she was afraid we may get sued because the layer said on there that his ex had till 7pm to call them. So I said fine and we get the number. I then texted his ex wife BM to dh kid and say she needs to have her bill collectors to stop calling his mother. BM texts back and says oh crap that she had already talked to them bill collectors and she didn't k ow how they got that number. So, evidentially she is having some creditors calling my mil and my mil is trying to stir the pot as if we are somehow responsible for his ex wife's problems. Then after that cluster my FiL visits..he's remarried and retired as well. He gets to talking about my garden and my citrus trees that I've been successful on and he hasn't on his own. He starts telling me that BM grandfather which was a nursery owner told him how to grow. I finally lost it and said if I had to hear about dh x and her family that I was going to puke. Dh says his parents can't stand his ex but from the way they constantly brings her up and her family tells me otherwise. Are they both trying to stir me up because dh doesn't jump to their will on his off days?

Settle down.

Bill collectors will call anybody and everybody who might have the slimmest ever connection to the wanted person. It's what they do.

Look, MIL was an innocent bystander. She got a call, was clueless on what it was all about or what it could mean (if anything). She let you guys know about the call. No evil intent. No pot stirring.

Bill collectors are merciless in pursuit of their target. Just apologize to MIL that they needlessly bothered her over deadbeat BM. If collectors bother MIL again over BM, she can give them BM's phone numbers and they'll stop calling MIL.

Hopefully SM washes her hands of you. I'm wondering why your husband didn't check you for speaking to his mother the way you did.

Your MIL waw trying to give her son a heads up. She did exactly what any normal person would do. Your reaction was absolutely ridiculous. You even come across as the crazy one in the exchange with BM. Your responses/reaction to both women and the fact that you have to be responsible for checking his credit twice a year, makes your husband look like a wuss.

DisneyFan, he is always with me when I check history report for him because..he is computer illiterate. I don't think I was out of line giving her my opinion as she always voices her opinions so rudely to me. The lady definitely has a problem with me because earlier that day she called me a hoarder. My dh house was a wreck and yard full of broke down mowers and junk that I had hauled off. I cleaned up his entire home and as for my home I owned prior has always been kept neat and I've seen those shows hoarders and I'm no hoarder. She also has photos of his x step kid in her living room but no photos of me or my son and I have given her photos.

TIme to register MIL's # on the no call list. That should cut down on the XW calls to your MIL. I think your strategy of confronting the IL clan on any mention of XW is a good one. Do it immediately every time it comes up.
