Child Support Conference next week....not sure what to expect

I’ve never been to one so I’m not sure what to expect. Is it simply us providing the information that was requested? Do they usually give an amount there, or is it something that they will figure up and then come up with later. Are we given the opportunity to discuss and maybe come to an agreement there? My attorney said that, unless I was afraid of ex-H there really wasn’t any reason that he, the attorney, should attend…no reason to waste the money.

There is a formula they use. No real surprises. You can find it online for your state. The discretionary amount for us was the amount spent on the kids monthly that is put in. We use a software program so we were able to account for every dime. BM went in thinking she was entitled to over 2K a month. Turned out that the three years before DH was entitle to 500 a month from her and never went for it. So with the change in custody to her getting SD full time, and 50/50 with SS, BM owed DH $5.00 a month. He laughed at her in the meeting and said he would let it go as good faith. Fast forward and we got SS full time and she has SD full time and no child support for either parent.

That was a funny turn of events, her owing him $5 per month...lol. I'm sure, had the tables been turned, she wouldn't have just let that $5 go.

Thanks guys! I figured it was going to be a pretty easy experience. I'm not concerned about sports's fees or anything as I usually pay for them myself. I don't see any disagreements coming along regarding uncovered medical expenses either, so it should be cut and dry.

If you are paying those fees, you need to have that dollar amount...That goes a long way in the formula. We had clothes, trips everything spent on SS and SD.

You can get a pretty close estimate if you go to your state's online CS calculator. You input your income information and other pertinate data, input the oppositions income and pertinate data (you can estimate it if you don't know for sure) and the calculator will give you a pretty good idea of what the outcome will be.

In our case the judge issued the new CS amount immediately both times we were in for a CS modification.

It took a few weeks for the CS to get changed in the system and for the direct payroll with holding to kick in.

It was overall a pretty simple and straight forward process.

Good luck.
