OT Office Question

Lulu90's picture

I have a crappy office (my window looks into a hall) Someone with a better office just said he is leaving today (health reasons) How long should I wait before asking for his office? How do I start that conversation?

Sorry if I sound not upset about him leaving he wasn't super nice to me.

Psh I would run over to my boss as soon as I saw he was in a good mood and had a free moment and let him know that I was interested in Ole Ted's office with a view. I would start off like "Hey boss, how's it going?! Yeah I just heard Ted is leaving and his office is up for grabs. Is there some sort of order for how is chosen to get the office. I would love to move in once Ted is out if you don't already have plans for it."

Are there other employees (in a similar position to you) who may also want a crack at that office?

I would also tread lightly if I were you about pushing this too hard. It sounds like there is no love lost between you and this man, and others (including your boss) may know that. Now this man says he must leave due to health reasons - that could mean a serious, perhaps life-threatening, illness.

I would approach this with caution, and genuine concern - first of all, for the guy who must give up his job due to "health reasons." Your boss may be privvy to info about that you don't know and the boss may not take kindly to your bopping in and trying to get dibs on the guy's office.

You don't want to look like some gleeful ghoul who can't wait for your nemesis to get out so you can get his cushier digs.

Sorry - but we just learned this morning that a woman here in our office unexpectedly died this morning. Besides being workers we are all human beings first and foremost - I hope. Even those that are not "super nice."

Thanks, HeavenLike. She left behind a small child. She was in the office the day before and seemed perfectly normal with no complaints about how she was feeling.

Goes to show you that the old saying is true, "Every day is a gift."

Just move in ..... }:)

I think you have to ask immediately, simply ask if there's any other plans for the office or if you could have it... reason being ergonomics... your office has no natural light and it makes you depressed...
