O/T: New Year’s Day food

What are your (family's) New Year's Day food superstitions or traditions?

I grew-up on the west coast in California. Not a New Year’s Day thing for us, but on NYE our tradition was that our door was open to family and friends. We did a large spread of finger foods, usually meats/veggies/dips, and several pots of homemade fondue with San Francisco sourdough bread. No superstitions.

DH, born and raised in the south, likes to have black-eyed peas with pork (sausage or bacon), and a cabbage side dish. No food with wings (something about “luck flying away”), but they do eggs, because deviled eggs. Since I find these southern dishes generally bland, I try to change it up. This year I’m thinking of making a curried black-eyed peas dish.

Now that sounds good, a curried black eye pea dish...BEPs, since I am East coast and south, have been a staple since I was little. They have a strong flavor that I think would pair well with the curry. I don't like them well enough to have them throughout the year but I know DH is going to ask if we are going to have them so you have given me a path here :)...hmmmmmm

I’m from Alabama and we always did what we call hoppin John. Black eyed peas over rice with a side of greens for luck/money. With cornbread. Saw a new recipe for black eyed pea cornbread I want to try. I know, southern again.

Also, I LOVE cornbread. But, west coast style is generally on the sweet side. As in, it’s generally served and eaten with whipped honey butter.

I’ll never forget the first time I had cornbread in the south. It was so underwhelming and weirdly - salty. I was like “Is this it?! This is southern cornbread?”

Ahhh tears. Haha.

The funniest part about this...

I can’t handle how fried and sweet things are since I moved to the south. Lol. I’m from the west coast.

Growing up we had black eyed peas w/ rice, greens, some sort of pork.

I read where you said no chicken because my luck will fly away. Lol....I am making barbecue chicken tomorrow. I will still have black eyed peas over rice and greens.

I am making lasagna for tonight's festivities.

DH and I bought 6 clusters of snowcrab legs that were on sale. It is a no-kid weekend, so he and I are going to have a wonderful dinner of crab and tiny red roasted potatoes with rosemary. It's not a tradition, but it's what we're having.
