DH is driving me crazy
This man really really needs to go back to work.
I really want to give him a swirly.
Last week was a no skid week. We didn't argue once. We get skids on Friday and had two arguments on Saturday.
DH asked me several times last week what I wanted to do this weekend. I said each time that we need to go get SS's school supplies and shoes. We bought him $300 worth of clothes when he moved in full time in Feb and it all still fits. So, we aren't buying him any clothes.
On Saturday, I asked DH if we wanted to go with me and SS or if he wanted to stay home. He asked me if I'm getting his shoes at Payless. I said, Yes I am. He got pissed and stormed off saying his kid isn't getting cheap shoes at Payless.
I don't understand this man
1. He isn't working. We can't afford to spend $70+ on a pair of shoes for SS.
2. We get almost all skid clothes from the GoodWill. Why does he care if brand new shoes come from Payless.
3. Last time we bought SS expense shoes, he only wore them 2 days because they hurt his feet. Instead of making him break them in, DH went and bought him another pair....AT PAYLESS.
Awhile later I heard him asking SS if he fit in a pair of DH's old shoes. So, instead of a new pair of shoes from Payless, SS is wearing an old pair of DH's shoes to school this year.
What the heck!!!! I feel like he's just trying to find something to be bad about when skids are around. Like I'm a monster for trying to buy SS a pair of shoes.
I also didn't go buy school supplies. It's all on DH now.

How long do $30 shoes last? Do the kids wear the same shoes all year? Apologies for asking but I somehow have the impression that you don't wear school uniforms in the States and this is a pair of shoes for a first day at school? $30 shoes are uniform shoes that our children wear for 12 months in my country. This seems quite high to me.

I teach in an urban, NYC public school. We are a uniform school(that means we have uniforms, but we can't force kids to wear them).Those cheap shoes($20-$30) do not last.
They look like crap by Christmas.
I don't think I've ever had a student wear the same pair of shoes all year. My son sure as heck didn't.
They all start the year off with a new pair of sneakers and shoes. They have a new pair of both after Christmas and spring break.

Our uniforms are compulsory and I buy Polly 2 pairs of black girls shoes at $50 for both for a year. Depending on her foot growth they will last in to term 1 of next year. Her sports shoes are 4 pairs a year which last only 12 months. They are regulation white sports shoes that she uses for Atheltics and Netball year round.
It shows how very different cost of living is in our respective countries as I actually buy her the more expensive shoes.

Ok. I maybe don't know your backstory but why isn't your DH working? Certainly unemployed people shouldn't buy expensive stuff. Shoes are tricky though. Poor quality shoes would damage ones feet. Payless shoes typically make feet sweat really bad. Now I believe you can find decent shoes on clearance and outlets. You can get new balance in DSW for a good price and they will last a year. It certainly isn't $70! There are plenty of affordable options rather than Payless but they don't have to be fancy or $70!

He was laid off the end of May. Hasn't been able to find anything since. He is getting unemployment and doing small side jobs.

My DH wears sneakers to work (RN). We buy New Balance at DSW (but they have them elsewhere too) for around $50 and they last him a year.. on his feet all night. I just bought reebok and new balance for myself (for gym, I don't wear sneakers to work) I paid $45 for NB and after I used coupon I Think I paid $30 for reebok. Do you have DSW by you? Is he a big kid for 11 year old or you still buy in kids stores?
I was a single mother and always bought DD shoes on clearance racks at DSW or went to outlet mall. I did buy dressy shoes once at pay less for her and her feet swam in sweat.

Yes. For years I told DH that SS was going to be really tall. My brother is 6'5. Nope. DH insisted he wouldn't be any taller than DH is (around 6'). Well, SS is 11 years old and is 5'8. He will probably be taller than DH before he hits high school.

Not sure - 300$ at a thrift store sounds reasonable if it's an entire wardrobe, which could very well be since he moved in full time....
Around here, things average 3-7$ but can go up to 20 or 30 depending on the item..... average it at 5$ an item, that's 10 pants, 10 shorts, 10 tshirts, 10 sweaters, a few pairs of shoes, boots, a jacket or two, and maybe 40-50$ of "extra stuff" he might need.
I spend about that in a year for each of my kids, easy... I just tend to spread it out to every season rather than once or twice a year

Oh I see. I didn't think about that, I shopped in Salvation Army store twice in my life (wouldn't buy used shoes though), I bought DD and myself winter clothes and summer clothes one year when things were tough many years ago. I recall I was very impressed with prices how low they were. Really helped me that year. But it was over 20 years ago. Things maybe changed.
There is a Salvation Army by us where we donate clothes. I don't go inside, you can drop It off in the back but my mom recently went inside and she said it looked like they had nice looking stuff. Maybe ought to take a look. A colleague of mine sometimes buys cute stuff in thrift stores. I have no patience to dig through stuff. I like to shop and I'd probably find and end up buying stuff I don't need even in Salvation Army lol I don't have good impulse control lol

There's some nice stuff sometimes. You just have to be willing to spend the time looking...and go regularly.
I've bought several nice skirt/pant suits there, for work... from Ann Taylor to Ralph Lauren.. even Elie Tahari. I picked up a pair of Betsy Johnson shoes worth over 100$ once for 3$, not a scuff on them.
The Salvation Army isn't really as "good" as Value Village or other thrift stores around, but sometimes you find decent things. I've bought many things over the years, including second hand furniture, toys, books, clothes, dishes...
I have this gorgeous piece of art in my bedroom - it's a nude couple, embracing, sketched in sepia tones...(not explicit, can't see nip or anything lol) in a large mahogany frame with gold lamé on it... I paid 30$. It's about 3 x 5 feet... really nice.
I also have a large stained oak liquor cabinet (takes up almost an entire wall) that I picked up for 50$.

I live in a large metropolitan area so there are tons of stores as well. I have a tendency to be loyal to the same stores though. Almost all my clothes/shoes/ bags are all from the same stores. I am creature of habit. Same with DH. We also shop online a lot. Especially during busy holiday seasons. Easy.

I wouldn't buy clothes a year ahead either as kids are always grow out of it. Plus most sales are seasonal

I'm assuming when you say "shoes" you are talking about sneakers?? I'm assuming an 11 year old pretty much where's sneakers to school each day and not like hiking boots or something??
I personally think it's dumb to spend 75 on a pair of Nike or whatever name brand sneakers for a kid who is going to grow out of them and/or destroy them in a few months anyway. BUT I would also never send my kid to school in payless or walmart sneakers.. BUT like Disney said I have a job so I can be a snob.
I got BS7 2 pairs of sneakers for school this year at 6 p.m. Shipping was free and they came the very next day after I ordered them! I got a pair of North Face and a pair of Saucony sneakers and paid less than $60.00 for BOTH!
