OT--Have you ever had a Stye?

LikeMinded's picture

It hurts, and it's miserable. It feels like I have a staple going through my eyelid.

Has anyone gone through this?

Any home remedies? (as luck would have it, I have an eye exam scheduled on Saturday, but this is really painful right now...hot tea bag helps a little)

How long did it last for you?I stayed home today, because my eyelid is so swollen and oozing that I can't keep my eye open... but I can't stay home 7 days over this.

I look like elephant man Sad

DISCLAIMER, THE FOLLOWING POST IS GROSS, DO NOT READ IF YOU'RE EATING ANYTHING, LOL!

I'm not sure where I would put a ring. There is a tiny white pimple under the eyelashes, on the inner eyelid, but I don't think it's the stye, I think it's just a decoy. The entire eyelid is very swollen, especially the upper eyelid near the tear duct in the corner of my eye.

So where would you put the gold ring?

I'm going to agree, rubbing the gold band on it does make it go away. I, too, didn't want to believe it but it works!

They hurt like heck! Warm wash cloth and yes definitely find the problem eyelash and remove it. That has always worked for me.

Also, tea bags work well. Steep a bag of chamomile, squeeze out the extra moisture and apply gently. They stay warm longer than cloths, but just be very careful it's not TOO warm.

This might be gross for some people, but I have a friend who had a stye while she was still breastfeeding her son. She did some research and found out that breast milk can help with various infections and other issues, so she used some on her stye and it went away. I'm not sure if you have access to any breast milk though.....

LOL. I don't think I'd want to use someone else's breast milk anyway. I don't even know if I'd use my own. I wasn't sure how desperate you were. Smile

Thyme is a great, natural disinfectant. Infuse it (like any herbal tea) and rinse your eyes with the water. Make sure it's strained - you don't want bits geting into your eyes by mistake. And of couse, be careful with the temperature - it should be warm, not hot.
Also styes are contagious - so rinse both eyes.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them all! Well, except for the breast milk.

How long does this last?

So a stye is formed when the tear duct is blocked. That white pimple you are seeing is actually a blocked duct. As the fluid gets caught behind the blockage it can build up causing swelling. Sometimes it even gets infected causing even more redness and swelling. You need to get rid of the blockage and treat the infection.

1. Start hot compresses to the lid as frequently as you can. The object is to dilate the duct and soften the blockage. Massage (gently) the area of the blocked duct.

2. Call your eye doctors office and see if they will prescribe antibiotic ointment for you eye over the phone. If not ask if you can come in for a sick visit.

I would not recommend putting anything else in your eye.

Still at home, goofing off with you guys...

So by last night my other eye was starting to ooze too and look swollen, which completely freaked me out. The Stye looked like a piece of cauliflower between my eyelid and my eyeball. After a day long of hot compresses and tea compresses, it finally started to drain.

This morning I looked like a baby chick with both eyes swollen and closed...

I went to the doctor and although I have a stye I also have some kind of other eye condition in both eyes, possibly a virus. Doctor gave me antibiotic drops, oral antibioitics and an NSAID for the swellling. I'm avoiding the NSAID because those hurt my gut. Not too happy about killing my good gut flora, but I got to the point where my eyes were so blurry I couldn't see.

The good news is I won't be needing to ask any of you for some breastmilk and/or pee Biggrin
