zerostepdrama's picture

I love to read. But defintely in the past few years I havent had time for it like I used to.

I read all types of books.

I went to the library a couple of weeks ago and got a lot of books and I am working my way through them while I have some down time. Recently read in the past week:

I read the book by Michelle Knight (the Cleveland OH kidnap victim)

I'm With the Band by Pamela Des Barres. Memior about a groupie.

Currently reading Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. Very good book so far and I plan on reading some more by her.

Curious as to what is your favorite book or something that you would recommend.

Right now I'm reading the William Monk series by Anne Perry. I tend to really enjoy detective stories as long as there is a heavily psychological element. Not scary, but that the answer lies in understanding human nature - or in how human flaws can turn inhuman. And I really enjoy books that are well-written. Some of my favourite authors in this genre include Dick Francis, Robert B. Parker, and Sue Grafton. Oh, and Ayelet Waldman.

I like Regency romances, a favourite author Amanda Scott.

In the slightly sci-fi genre I LOVE Jim Butcher. The Codex Alera was a wonderful, delightful, surprise. Oh, and The Family Tree by Sheri S. Tepper is complex, yet told in an easy, twisting, softly joyful way.

Ha, and if I read porn, I like paranormal stories - somehow I can then 'buy into' these awesome guys. Normal human guys, no way would I believe it lol!! I liked Sherrilyn Kenyon, Laurann Dohner and Lora Leigh.

I've just started the Divergent series. I also read some sci-fi. Don't have a lot of time and I tend to want to know what happens so I end up staying up late reading too much.

Any of Gyllian Flynn's novels.

I am SO glad I read Gone Girl before anyone even thought about turning it into a movie. If you've seen the movie, skip that book. It won't have the same impact.

Her other two are equally effed up and engrossing.

I read the book before the movie. I actually thought the movie was very good and did the book justice (from what I remembered) Like you I read the book a long time ago, so by the time I watched the movie, I kind of had gotten the details from the book. I will have to check out her other books.

Oh, I loved the movie. It's one of the best movies based on a novel that I've ever seen. I just think I wouldn't have been able to get into the book if I had seen it first.

As psychologically disturbing as the movie is, the book makes it all seem so much more twisted. Loved it.

The Poisonwood Bible was the last book that completely wrecked my life for weeks. I wish I could find another book that could do that to me.

Thank you Rising!

Great suggestions. I've read a few of those but you mentioned a few that slipped past my radar. I'm on it. Smile

I have some favorite authors. Jim Butcher (fantasy sci-fi), as moeilijk said, is good. David Weber's Honor Harrington series is awesome (space sci-fi), I've read every single book multiple times. Susan R Matthews is an excellent (and often overlooked) sci-fi/psych writer.

Most recently I've been reading:
A Discovery Of Witches (trilogy, I'm almost done with book 2, but I'm losing interest)
The Abyss Beyond Dreams by Peter Hamilton (Excellent, just be aware that his writing style is to have 3 different stories that only come together at the end.)

My next book will probably be:
In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette (non-fiction)

Wow, I agree on three of yours Jim Butcher, David Weber are great. If you like Honor Harrrington you might like Mike Shephard's Kris Longknife series. Its not quite as good but still ok. Like you I tried A Discovery of Witches and couldn't be bothered.

I love reading fiction and it can't be anything to serious. Mostly crime, thrillers and sci-fi.

Karin Slaughter's Cop Town was excellent.

I recommend to everyone I know - Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (currently 8 HUGE books plus numerous other spinoff stories, and she has promised 2 more books in the main series). The first book is currently a series on Starz.

Also, the Magician series (3 books) by Lev Grossman. It's an adult darker combination of Hogwarts and Narnia. Very good.

An oldie but a goodie is Marian Keyes - Rachel's Holiday.

There's a description in this of the havoc teenage girls can bring to the household drinks cabinet that has me laughing just thinking about it. (Though if any of the skids did the same thing to me I doubt I'd be as amused)

The Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean M. Auel - oldie but goodie.
I love Marian Keyes.
Ditto Maeve Binchy.
Helen Forrester - her autobiographical books are brilliant.
Since getting my Kindle I'm no longer starved for reading material - I tend to download anything that takes my fancy, with no particular genre or type... Except for horror. I hate that sort of stuff, it scares me!!! Not a good look when you're 36 and insisting on looking under the bed and sleeping with the light on Blum 3

I read Tara Road by Maeve Binchy and I still think about that book. It was probably 15 years ago that I read it!

I've been "reading" a lot of James Patterson lately. And by "reading" I mean I get the audiobooks on my phone and listen to them on my commute to work through the Bluetooth in my SUV.

He's my go to author if I want to read something but cant find anything good. I know with James Patterson I will get a good book.

John Grisham too. But I think I have read most of his books. Not sure if he has come out with anything new...

I have to admit..it's been a very very long time since I've read an actual book. However, there's a website that has tons of short stories. I believe it's a "creative writing" site. I enjoy some of the stories on there and usually read them nightly before bed Smile

Light reads... Candace Bushnell, Jennifer Crusie, Liane Moriarty.

I just reread Misery Loves Cabernet and Keep Calm and Carry a Big Drink by Kim Gruenfield while I was sick.

Now I'm back to War of the Roses by Alison Weir (biography on the fight for the crown between the House of Plantagenet and the houses of Lancaster (Tudor) and York)

I'm waiting for Jen Lancaster's new book to come out. As well as the new reads from Stacey Ballis & Sarah Pekanen.

I read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt but was not impressed.

The Book Thief was probably the best book I've read in a long time.

Favorites? I dunno. That's like Sophie's choice.

This week, I've read "Foreign Faction" by James Kolar who was a lead investigator in the JonBenet Ramsey murder. It was pretty good. and then today I read the book rated 'best of 2014' by Amazon "Everything I never told you". I'm trying not to spend any more money at amazon this week! Haha.

Some of my favorites off the top of my head that haven't already been mentioned.

Serena (there is supposed to be a movie about it with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence)

The books by Khaled Hosseini. OMG those are AMAZING! The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns is better then his last book (And the Mountains Echoed)
