OT - work sucks

Happy weekend one and all. Hope everyone is fully disengaged and having fun.

This may be a little long and ranty. Work is beyond awful.

I've spent the last 6 months trying to make my new director happy. Which is impossible but I tried for 60/80 hours a week.

More fool me. We had a regular catch up scheduled on Friday. He started by given another 5 projects to work on. I presented a completed project to reorganise the structure of the entire £2bn division which he says and I quote "was excellent". OK so far same shit different day.

Then he says that he's decided to bring in someone else to run my team because he needs a director for the role and hopes I understand. His two options for me are to basically take a more junior role or leave. But he didn't come out and say that my job was redundant. Oh no! If he had I'd have a better chance of suing for constructive dismissal. He said that he'd like to have a smooth 6 month transition to the new person. By what I'm sure is a coincidence (NOT) my notice period is 6 months.

Oh and he used the same stupid line they gave me when he started. "This is because we want you to have a better work life balance" Yup, having no income will be great for my life.

And then came out with this old chesnut - "This is really hard for me" Boo hoo, Am I supposed to feel sorry for you? Really? It reminded me of the classic break up line - "Its not you, its me"

This is the same moron who just gave me a great rating in my annual appraisal.

He asked what I thought. I stood up picked up my papers and said "This is exactly what I predicted would happen. You've basically used me while you went through the recruitment process." He denied this but at my level most people are on 3/6 months notice so he's lying. I then said I needed the weekend to think about things.

But seriously, who starts a fucking meeting to tell someone that they don't really have a job anymore by giving them new projects. Is it just me or is this slightly insane?

What will happen is that the new director will start and be given an unlimited budget to resource the team. (I've been working on a shoe string) He'll (because it will be a man) will recruit an army of minions and the board will be slapping themselves on the back for what a great decison they've made. But they couldn't just give me that resources to do my job to the best of my ability...

You will feel such relief to be out from under this very soon, and your emotional life will get better. My h. went through this and after 6 painful months is finally starting the very best job he has ever had!!!

You are smart to find something else while you are still getting paid. It is dark days when that money runs out, trust me Sad I would try to think of this as freedom, they will regret doing this to you and look like fools when you go somewhere else that appreciates you!!!!

Hugs and it is not over for you - hold your head up and vent elsewhere so you can be positive on interviews . . . my h. told the truth that he was fired for something he did not do, and did suffer many defeats but now has prevailed . . . and I know you will too!! hugs Smile

oh and guess what . . . my work 'demoted' me too, but I felt forced to stay for the money, but it has turned out to be a much better job - don't worry what people will think, just take their money then go home and live your real life!! Or, if you can, leave and let them do their own f'd up projects and bs work and training!!

Thanks all of you for your kind words of wisdom!

You are all right.

It is so cathartic to write everything down here and to get sensible support.

Come Monday I'm working "to rule". My contract says 9 to 5.30 with an hour for lunch so I'll have lots of free time to job hunt. Sucks to be the board though. They've screwed up as I'm the only one who knows the end to end routine.

Sorry that sucks. Time to take care of you. You have 6 months to find something wonderful. Make sure you use your lunch hour to do so. You new catch phrase.... "Oh i'm not sure, you better check with the director."

I know you are right. I love the directness straight to the heart of the problem.

Real crappy way to do that do you! But this could be a good thing. I was laid off about 2.5 years ago from a job I had been at for 12 years. I took something at lower pay for awhile while I was looking but now I have a job that is so much better than the other one! I used to have dreams about trying to kill my manager and get away with it (think hit and run with my car or somehow getting a sniper rifle (actually I can get one of those lol))
