OT/When did your kids or skids find out the truth about Santa?

HappyCow's picture

DD7 still believes in Santa. DH and I were talking last night that this is probably the last year we can use our "Santa card" when trying to get her to do something or stop doing something annoying. I went on the Portable North Pole site and made her the cutest personalized video (I highly recommend this site) and was feeling a little blue that my kid is soon going to be a snarky preteen know it all.

SD16 when she was 9 was she reminded me that I promised to never lie to her and then she hit me with the is Santa real question. She had known for awhile but was afraid to say anything in fear of not getting any presents.

I have a cousin that was so devastated about finding out Santa wasn't real he refuses to lie to his 4 year old about Santa. Poor kid is missing out on so much magic this time of year.

My skids are 9 and still believe. I think this will be their last year. I think I was around 9 when I found out too. A lot of people don't like to lie to their kids but it's fun and I was never scarred when I found out. I actually thought how nice it was that my parents bought all those gidts and took no credit for them all to help me have Christmas magic lol.

SD14 figured it out a few years ago. We think SS12 is starting too. SS10 still believes 100%

I'm dying for SS7 to find out there's no Santa. Tired of the drama of letters for Santa back and forth from Bm's house to ours and of tears when SS7 spends Xmas with us but believes Santa is stopping by Bm's.

My SD11 is teetering on the edge of believing. SS5 and SS4 believe wholeheartedly.

If anyone needs a "convincing kit", I highly reccomend this! My skids went crazy, they couldn't BELIEVE that *I* knew Santa and had his number in my phone! And Santa made them a video and call and sent autographs!

Maybe for some kids. I found out when I was old enough to "get" that my parents were just doing it to bring me joy and for fun. We set up a hidden camera one year and caught "Santa" (aka my Dad in a red Land's End jacket) putting out presents. But I was SO CONVINCED!!! Whenever I would question my parents would say "Think about it. Do you really think WE would buy you ALL of these presents?!" And I realized no way my parents would spoil us so much, it had to be Santa.

I didn't feel betrayed at all, and when I found out I even felt cool, like I was in on the "secret" and could help keep the joy alive in my younger siblings for a few ore years.

But I've always been an old soul lol

SD7 does not believe in Santa and SD6 is following right behind her. all other BK's and SK's know there is no Santa (excluding LO).

But.. younger SD's believe in that elf.. lol. they go back and forth with Santa. Their BM told them on a 2 hour visit right before Christmas (they were 4 and 5 at the time) that Santa wasn't real and DH and I were lying to them. It blew up her face when a year later "santa has come to mommy's house for you guys too blah blah blah... "

It hasn't traumatized them in the way that she had hoped, SD's tease me saying " I know you're really santa" So I had them call a santa hotline. lol. The looks on their faces! They still go back and forth "Suzy at school said there's no Santa" They have been hearing a lot of this at school lately. I honestly don't think they'll be devastated when they know for sure.

None of the older kids were and it actually made them appreciate their gifts more.

BS8 still believes, despite me telling him otherwise! Why would I end this wonderful story?! Because he is TERRIFIED of Santa. He HATES going anywhere where Santa could possibly be - it is his school Christmas party this week, and he will not go because Santa will be there! I have absolutely no idea why he hates him (although the fat, old guy with a huge white beard and wearing a crazy red suit asking little kids to sit on his knee is a little weird when you think about it!!).

I am not sure if part of it is BS8 does not like the power Santa has, in general and over his Christmas! Regardless, I am looking forward to when he does not believe and we can relax!

LOL! He reminds me of my baby sister. When she was little, she was absolutely terrified of Santa. My mom had to tell her the truth when she was about 6 because the poor thing wouldn't sleep the week before Christmas. "I don't want that strange guy coming into my house!" She'd barricade herself in her room at night. She simply didn't like the idea of this strange man invading her home, whether he was leaving presents or not! She doesn't have kids yet, but swears she'll never perpetuate the Santa myth. LOL.

I wish SD6 would find out he's not real. Every year she says the same thing "Mommy says Santa comes twice for me because I'm more special than the other kids." I have a DD now and if SD says that crap around her I'm going to have a hard time not shutting it down.

I think you have some real Santa issues Missy! You can NOT have your avatar be the great "Santa!!!!!! I know him!!!" Elf and say Santa is silly.... blasphemy! Wink

...although I guess I may be rather blasphemous in my own way, because I just can't bring myself to do that damn creepy Elf on the shelf. I just can't.

DaizyDuke's picture

Yeah, I totally don't get the whole "he's scarred for life!!!!!" nonsense that some people get all hot and bothered about when their kid finds out that Santa is not real. I will definitely be sad when BS4 does not believe anymore, because there is nothing better than seeing his face light up when he sees Santa. But it will be an "I'm sad because he is growing up" kind of way.

I saw Elf was on the other night! We DVR'd it last year, so I am actually holding out and plan on watching Elf and Christmas Story on Christmas Eve. Wink

My mom caught me trying to sneak a peak ONCE and she very calmly said "Oh, you want to peek at your gifts? that's cool, but what you see, you don't get" I NEVER tried to peek again.

When my son realized that Santa wasn't real, he said, "So, it was you that bought all of the presents?" Then he did the most extraordinary thing - he thanked me for all that I had done. I'll never forget that. He's BIG about Christmas traditions to the point it's almost annoying. If we do anything new, it has to be a new tradition to do every year. He's 19 now, but he still gets little-kid excited over Christmas. When we told him we were doing dinner and lights this weekend, I could almost see a tail wagging like a little puppy. He just smiled real big and said "Doing Christmas shit - I like it!"

DaizyDuke's picture

Even after I was old enough to know that Santa wasn't real, (and I don't think anyone ever had a sit down "santa and the birds and the bees discussion with me) I just knew? My mom STILL filled our stockings and left a gift from "santa" right up until I turned 18 and moved out. It was just part of Christmas.

I will do the same with BS4, but I love to be silly anyway and give BS4 gifts from "the cat", "the dog", "the horse" etc. He actually remembered it from last year because he just said the other day, "remember when kitty gave me that puzzle for Christmas last year?" Biggrin

I do that too. SD has a gift under the tree right now from Daisy one of our dogs. SS said he hopes he gets a gift from Daisy too.

GhostWhoCooksDinner's picture

Haha! We do that too! It's fun! Gifts from the cats, Frosty the Snowman, the elves, whoever. Last year I got a pair of socks with ninjas on them. They were from Chuck Norris. I got a Walking Dead blanket from Rick Grimes. BS got a Breaking Bad t-shirt from Walter and Jesse, with love. HA! Once you look at the tag, you have a clue as to what might be inside, but it doesn't give away the surprise.

I can't wait until SS6 discovers Santa isn't real and we no longer have to deal with the stupid Elf on the Shelf. Had I realized how much the stupid thing would annoy me when it showed up two years ago at the request of BM, I would have put my foot down about it. It's really just another thing for BM to "coordinate" with my DH. Also it's super creepy looking.

Of course the way things are going with Skidly, he'll probably believe in Santa until he's 30.

DaizyDuke's picture

I'm with you on the Elf nonsense. I just can't I think he is creepy and it would creep ME out to have him lurking around my house. I contemplated doing the "elf on the shelf" concept but with maybe a stuffed reindeer or something less creepy than that stupid elf... but I decided to opt out.

I do other stuff for BS4 like letter from Santa, video from Santa etc. but nope, can't do that creepy Elf... Sad

GhostWhoCooksDinner's picture

I hate the elf! The only way it would be fun is if you could put him in inappropriate scenarios: getting into the wine, placing him in a suggestive pose with Barbie, etc. We would totally do that at my house. It's probably a good thing we don't have the elf!

When my nephew was about eight, he came to me all serious asking for an honest answer. "Does Santa REALLY exist?" I told him it's a game grownups play, buying gifts for the kids we love and saying they come from Santa, and now that he's in on the secret he could start getting something for the kids he loved. Next year it was so cute, he got small gifts for all his siblings, put them under the tree and winked at me.

Ninji's picture

I think SD10 knows but doesn't say anything and SS8 has asked a dozen times this year if santa is real. I guess they are at that age. Oh, well we can start some new traditions. My partents started letting us open gifts at midnight when we were teenagers. It was fun, but I don't know if I can stay up that late anymore. Blum 3

that's brilliant ricky!!!

i'm glad the boys are all past that age... now it's just a case of the Gimmies adn what they can get with their "christmas money". Sad

Ooh boy...

SS was around 6 or 7 at the time when he stopped believing in Santa. It's also around the time that DW and Donkeykong split up.

The story, as it was originally told to me was that one of SS's school teachers told the class that Santa wasn't real. This mortified SS and DW tried her best to keep the fantasy alive. As the years passed, this story changed. It wasn't the school teacher that told them but one of the lunch/recess monitors that told them. This caused a fight between the kids who believed in Santa and those who didn't. SS chose to be on the side who didn't believe in order to be one of the "cool kids".

The version as it stands NOW, is that it was Donkeykong's mother who told SS that Santa Claus wasn't real and SS went to ask the teacher if it was true and the teacher confirmed it. DW marched down to the school to complain but she couldn't get conformation on exactly WHO told SS this.

As you can see, Santa Claus is more real than the story of how SS found out the truth.

Drac0's picture

Hee hee. I like that version!

but yeah...this time of year is when DW goes a little coo-coo. I can't wait to hear this year's version of "How Tall-Boy found out that Santa Claus wasn't real"
