Overweight Children

Ninji's picture

I've seen from some of the other post, that I'm not the only one with overweight Skids. They are not HUGE but both are already over 100lbs and they are 8 & 10.

My question is this, Where do you buy clothes for them?

SD10 cannot fit into children sizes anymore but she is too short to fit into adult sizes. The only thing I can find that sorta fits her is women's size 6 petite capris. The Capris fit her like regular length pants.

SS8 can fit into size 20 boys, but finding size 20 boys in anything is almost impossible. He is also too short for men's sizes.

Luckily, we live in Florida and can wear a lot of shorts, but it's winter now and they need long pants. BLAH

I see report after report about America obese children but I have no idea where they parents are getting clothes to fit these kids.

It's crazy, SD10 needs a dress for her first winter dance next week but no children dresses fit and adult clothes are not appropriate.

I wanted to buy them new pajamas for christmas but I can't find anything for SS and I hope the women's medium capri set I bought for SD actually fits.

SD11 is also like this. She is just so short that she just keeps getting more round. Nothing in the girls' department fits her. Juniors and Womens don't fit right. Fortunately, we've stopped buying clothes for her but what she does come in doesn't fit her well. The only things that seem to fit are some clothes from Kohl's. They have a brand that runs larger in their girls' department.

I think ordering online might be your only hope. My BS is the reverse-very tall and skinny. I order him jeans online. They carry sizes online that they don't in the stores.

I'm going to speak my mind about how kids get fat. Hate my guts if you choose...

My H showed me pics of SD18 when she was 10 and her shirts wouldn't cover her already protruding belly and I would estimate she weighed at least 100# then. My MIL mentioned to Sasquatch and DH several times that SD was getting too heavy and it offended them. So she was never told at a young age to scale back on eating or made to do anything active. Sasquatch is a burly, manly shaped woman so SD gets her shape naturally, Sasquatch is not fat per se...but being fat is SD's own doing.

If SD was active and ate right I would never say a word because I figure she is just the body type that holds weight differently. BUT she drinks a 2 liter of soda a day and LITERALLY lays on the couch ALL DAY and watches cartoons. She goes to on-line school so she never leaves the house. Each time I see her she is bigger and bigger.
She weighs 300# and takes up BOTH cushions on the love seat. She has low self-esteem and chose on-line school because all the kids made fun of her. The problem is she knows she needs to lose weight and she mentions it every time I see her but it's a lifestyle change to get off your ass and do SOMETHING. I have no sympathy for this lifestyle.

So I ask my H now...don't you wish you would have scaled her back at age 10 and made her go outside as opposed to laying around watching tv and drinking pop? Sometimes I think parents need to be the ones to hurt their kid's feelings before anyone else does.

My Ds14 wears a size 16 in boys. He is 108# he is outside or he is involved in a sport year around. I don't buy pop it's a special occasion drink and I don't let him sit on the couch and eat all day. Kids need to be active, that's why they are fatter than ever.

As far as clothes my SD wears a xxxL shirt and she has to have men's sizes.

Genetics are not what my gripe is about. My gripe is about immobile, lazy, over eating kids that are enabled by their parents to do just that... NOTHING!

I just get tired of hearing that SD is as big as a house yet I see no change in her lifestyle - so you will stay fat then...get over it lazy ass.

As if it's not embarrassing enough - she got arrested for stealing and the police report said "obese" under body type. CRIKEY :O I would have died

Ninji's picture

I 100% agree. These kids are overweight for several reasons

1. BM only gives the junk food and fast food, never cooks
2. They are lazy and NEVER go outside. SO won't make them because they have no friends in our neighborhood and because we live in Florida and "Its to hot" for his poor babies
3. While I love cooking and cook healthy meals, SO lets them eat like hogs. They will eat 2-3 man sizes servings at dinner and then have a treat after dinner.

When I try to talk to SO about their weight, he turns it back on me. Yes, I need to lose weight. I am a grown women and I struggle with my weight. BUT when I was in school, I was a twig AND this is about their future, NOT mine.

I feel sorry for both of them because kids are cruel and high school is going to be rough for them being smelly and overweight.

Ninji's picture

I can't imagine what either of them will look like at 18. She is already wearing size 6 womens and they are a bit snug. She tells me she wants to go on a diet and I tell her she just needs to go outside and play and stop eating so much junk. She's 10, she needs her parents to help her with this. She can't do it alone at this age.

I moved in when SD was 5 (now 8). SD has grown over a foot and only gained close to 10lbs. She weighs 87lbs now and is 4"6. SD is very self conscious about her appearance. I have a very hard time finding pants to fit her and she can wear some of my shirts. We used to be able to pull of the capris as pants but not anymore. I have found some random women's jeans that fit her around the waist so I cut and hem. Some are sz 1 and some sz 5. It's crazy.

My SD has an issue with eating her emotions. It used to be ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese.. and she would sneak food into her room. I don't let her do that. She now loves fruits.. she was into veggies for a while but not so much now. lol.

I am in the same boat... My DD is 8. She is 4'7'' and weighs 110 pounds. She is very active.. but nothing we do stops her from gaining. And she's starving all the time. It's so frustrating.

As for her clothes, I take her to Justice for girls. They have half sizes. And they're age appropriate for her. DD has short legs and a really long torso.. so I have a hard time finding clothes that fit.

onebright1's picture

Have you tried Justice for the girl?
My DD is 10 1/2 she is 113 lbs, but she is 5'3.5" tall!!! and leggy.
She still likes the girly frilly sparkly but can wear a size 3 in juniors.
I have found that Justice has up to size 20 in girls
DD wears the 16 regulars from there and they fit nicely. I did notice that they
carried 1/2 sizes for the plus girls.

I went through this with both my DDs. Oldest was always pretty chunky. I used to get her clothes at JCPenny. They had a large girls plus section that were stylish and it saved our lives! Not sure what they are like now because I have no little ones but they had a decent selection in store and a lot more online. Her whole wardrobe was from there. The good news is once she hit puberty, got her period she just thinned out on her own. Shes now almost 17 and weighs what she did in 6th grade but much taller and looks really good. Hovers between a 7 and a 9 at Hollister type stores.Smaller in ladies. Not skinny, skinny but looks really nice.

My youngest was a twig until 2nd grade. Have no idea what happened. She went on Prednisone-actually both my girls did for different reasons- and she ballooned. Nothing fit her. JCPennys plus sizes were too big and regular clothes were too small. This went on for about 4 years. It was horrible. I finally went to Kohls bought jeans that fit her waist in the juniors and took them to a seamstress and had them hemmed. She too thinned out on her own. Shes now 13 and is a 5 in juniors.

I never felt they were overeaters. I am overweight and have recently lost 25 pounds but still have about 50 to go so Im guessing we didnt eat the best or I wouldnt have been so heavy too. Stress from SD and BM and DHs family was always a factor for me. But I have learned it is a lifestyle change. Fast food is very rare here now and when we do we make smarter choices. I cook better than I did too.

Anyway try JCPenny for plus size or get her pants hemmed. Its tough today with all the styles so tight!

Ninji's picture

It is tough. When we were checking out of the store, actually at JCP, she was looking at a pair of skinny jeans. I told her should could wear that style when she became a teenager. She got a sad look on her face and said they would never fit. Poor thing.

I hope to god that my SD4 inherits her BMs body build and learns her eating styles. BM is a smaller frame than I am, doesnt have much of an appetite and eats healthy. My partner on the other hand is a chunkier build and his appetite is just plain excessive. The only reason the guy isnt the size of a house is because his work is physical.
Yet I see how much SD4 can eat and worry that she will get bigger as she gets older. At this age shes not big, shes tall for her age which is awkward as clothes in her age group are too short on arms and legs but clothes in the next age group up are too baggy on the belly.

Thank you everyone who suggested Justice for Girls. I went on the website and I have already picked out a few things. Biggrin

momandmore's picture

I wasn't one who suggested it but yes.. they have great clothes for bigger built girls. We do a lot of leggings with skirts for SD8. Their clothes are very popular with my 9 nieces and SD doesn't fit a lot of them great (bigger on top) So we do a lot of the ruffle skirts to try to fill out the bottom half a little. Their clothes are so versatile and they also have some great sales.

I re-joined this site just to reply to this post! LOL. Justice has been a god-send for my daughter! She's finally confident in herself again and I'm not hearing I'm fat all the time... she's too young for that at age 8.

Ninji's picture

I just bought her two shirts, some leggings and a couple cute little training bras. I hope they fit!

BethAnne's picture

I've taken up the legs and shortened the sleeves on a fair few pairs of shirts, pajamas and pants for overweight SD. Sometimes it is just easier, and doesn't take too long once you sit down to do it.

Plus size clothes help bridge the gap. But it was still a problem for us with SD because when she was 9 or 10 she had the waist of a 14-plus but not the legs, so they would fit around the middle but still be WAY too long. DH complained her legs were "too short." No, DH, her stomach is "too damn big." I also bought her capri pants, the ones that are designed to hit at the calf, and they worked for pants mostly.

One thing DH did was buy SD boys' jeans in the husky section, where you can buy based on both waist size and inseam. This worked great, it was the first pair of pants she had in years that actually fit. Until BM told SD they were "boys' jeans" and then she refused to wear them again.

Skipped through some responses, so I'll go back and read later.

SGD was 10 when I met her ... 10 years, 5'4", 225 lbs wearing her BD's camoflauge shorts and tank top with a mini sports bra (too small) to go swimming. Last Christmas I measured her and myself at the same time while we co-shopped for swimsuits. Most of her measurements were about 50"+ Apple-shaped without breast development other than fat. Purchased a 22W swimsuit for her with the help of online customer service. It was tough because she was still a kid and Women's swimsuit frequently had plunging necklines and cups and black and sexy ... inappropriate for a self-conscious young girl. No "husky," or big girl or adult ladies clothes worked.

Taking her true measurements with a tape measure shocked me but showed how years of cramming her into poorly proportioned clothes was ripping her up as much as anything.

I spent about $ 100 for a swimsuit for her that fit and was modest. Walmart, Koh'ls, Old Navy just do not have appropriate quality clothes for kids who are outside the box.

US sizing from LLBean, et al .... 22W, 24W as a 10 year old.
