Her deluxe apartment in the sky

bronx mom's picture

So my DH is helping SD 18 move into her new $2000 Manhattan apartment today (her share of the $4K total)... first they went and bought a bed frame/mattress and now they are at Target buying whatever she needs. Meanwhile I have to empty my checking account to pay for a plumbing emergency, we just got a state tax bill from 2009 that I can't pay, etc.

I get wanting to help your kids through college but this is just wrong.

No, the mom is paying. Well, he pays child support but not enough to cover this. And she isn't wealthy either.
We completely separated our money, so I don't have to ask what he's spending at Target, or whether he's contributing more to the apartment. I don't want to know.

Yeah. Ridiculous. I grew up in NYC so I understand the crazy prices, but never would I, or any of my friends, have expected a parent to pay that much for a college apartment. That's what dorms, or a job, are for.

she has a roommate-- her best friend is wealthy and the parents insist on the best-- so this is an example of BM keeping up with the Joneses.

Dear lord, I am paying for BS18 first semester at one of the top engineering school and his total housing is 2k and 2K for food. His tuition is paid for. That amount is going to be a problem when BM can't keep up that pace. I hope the kid is getting a job or work study program.

Keep your bills separate but don't let him off the hook for his half of any bills....If you tighten the noose, he can't help with extras.
