The Sabbatical of SOS Has Ended! (Hopefully)

Fellow STalkers, this is a day of celebration.  SOS (Significant Other - Son) has a job!

SOS graduated from high school several months ago, and like many kids on here, had no plans.  No job.  No chores.  No expectations.  Well, now he at least has a job.

I knew that SO would let him lounge around all summer to "rest" after the stress of barely doing anything in his final year of high school.  I'm sure he was "mentally exhausted" and swamped by the "anxiety" that comes with merely existing, having all your bills paid for by your mom and her boyfriend, and having pretty much everything you want.  Well, SO's stress level has been going up lately due to her daughter's numerous issues (see other blog entries), so I think she kind of decided to take it out on SOS and start pressuring him to get a job.

I think SOS's initial plan was keep his sabbatical going until the end of the year, but with SO starting to pressure him, he was at least paying lip service ot the idea of finding work.  He put in a total of 2 applications over the course of a month, but said "techinical issuses with his phone" were preveting him from finishing his Target application.  I figured this was a bullshit excuse, because he knew that SO is too busy to help him apply, and too busy to just take him to the store to apply in person.  Well, guess what?  Good old Paul wasn't too busy the last time he was home!

I took SOS to the store, and stood right next to him while he completed the applicaiton.  It turned out that he was telling the truth about the technical issues, and the nice man at the store was able to help him get the application turned in electronically.  They ended up hiring him on the spot!

To his credit, SOS seems to have a good attitude about working, and understands that the hand-outs his sister gets will not be available for him, since he is not the favorite.  I sincerely hope that he is not just shining us on by pretending to be happy about working, while secretly planning to sabotage his job so he will get sent home (like many kids on here would do).  Unlike his sister, SOS actually has a personality, and with enough guidance, might be able to launch into adulthood some day.  Fingers crossed!

SOS still needs a car, but I'll take a win where I can find one.

Well done for driving him to Target.  Might be the making of him.  Fingers crossed

If I hadn't driven him there, I'm confident that we would have continued to hear unintelligle, Bob Dylan-esque mumblings about his phone not working.  Even though it really was not working for the Target site, he would have used that excuse for other job applications.

I'm hoping he likes seeing that money stack up in his account, and I also hope that SO manages this money for him so he doesn't blow it on video games or his girlfrient.

Is encouraging.  Let's hope it continues!

My Sd18 also just got a job and because she applied online, didn't realize that the neighborhood is quite iffy. Kinda waiting for her to come to us with some excuse for why it's not working out, like she did with her first job when the popcorn smell at the movie theater made her sick. Sigh... how can I learn to celebrate small victories without secretly being anxious for it to fail?
