O/T, I Got a Promotion, More $$$ Blowing my own Horn
I got a promotion that I didn't even apply for. The company I work for had a big shake up starting in January, where a lot of the employees left within a 3 month time period. I am the last one of the original office personal for the office. I get to work from home, owner sent a crew over to set up all my office equipment and I am up an running.
I am doing the same job as before, the only difference is training new people to take over a lot of the work that was dumped in my lap in January. Once the three new trainees are trained, it will be back to normal, no more rushing to try to get everything done. No more working through my lunch hour, trying to catch up, and I get to work from HOME. YEA!! Down side everyone is emailing me with fifty thousand questions, but I don't care, the pay raise is worth it.
Now the funny part, I am now salary with guaranteed weekends off, three weeks paid vacation, & minium 10 days sick/PTO a year. I have to turn in copies of my home electric bill each month for 25% reimbursement on the bill for all the office equipment using power. Owner is paying for high speed internet and new phone line in my home office. New salary is a little over the six figures a year, I was making a little less than $50K a year. This is such a releif finanically, I am going to open banks for saving for my 2 grandsons college and a safety/exit acount,(If ever needed).
Now the down side, I haven't told DH about the promoion, it was yesterday that I got it, DH is out of town on a long haul truck load delivery. I am almost afraid to let DH know, he has no control over spending money, if he knows we have extra money for the month. I know I will have to tell him soon, but I don't want him to go crazy on the spending like a fool. I would like to have a very large nest egg set aside for emergencies.

A spender??? I'd keep it
A spender??? I'd keep it secret for a long as possible. Just go on as if nothing much has changed financially. I'm married to a spender. We finally have some money in the bank and it just feels safer.
I agree
I don't want him to find out in the long run and be all p*ssed off at me, but I would like to have some kind of savings set aside. DH plans on retiring in February 2019, and we will have to pay for medical insurance for another year and a half for him, till he can collect Medi-care. I am younger than DH, I will have to pay for medical for another 10 years, before I can reitre.
CAn you work it out with
CAn you work it out with payroll to have some of your paycheck automatically put into a bank account? That way you'll never see it.
Max out your 401k and or IR A
Max out your 401k and or IR A. Open a Roth IR A. That way you are putting away money for the future and it can't be touched now. Plus the 401k and the IR A are pre tax and if DH is only focused on your refund he'll never notice them.
I'll contact Accounting
If accounting can increase my contributions to my 401K and add a IRA, this would help hide some of the money. I am also going to ask that they use my personal account for direct deposit of my paycheck, this way I can transfer a shared amount to our joint account for bills, without him knowing how much each paycheck is.
Everyone is coming up with great suggestions, thank you so much.
Don't Tell DH
During Chef's guilty daddy/spend (my money) like a drunken sailor days, I NEVER told him about any of my raises/promotions...EVER! I'd keep it under my hat if i were you. if you spill the beans he will be tempted to spend up a storm. Until Chef got his own biz, he thought money grew on trees.
Agreed
And evil SD is starting to kiss up to DH, over the last few weeks. He's still stead fast that she is to apologize to me before he lets her come over, Her apology to me isn't worth spit to me.
Even
MORE reason to keep your lips sealed! Congrats! Will u need to explain away the telecommuting? If so just say the company is cutting office space rent.
DH knew that I trying for telecommuting
DH knew that I had put a request in for telecommuting, for at least the next 6 months. My DS41 is recovering from back surgery and has in home therapy.
BINGO!
"After much reluctance, my company decided to cut their office space rental and allow me to telecommute."
On the taxes..."Gee whiz I think we will OWE this year."
Repeat early and often.
LOL,
Everything is falling into place for a more financially secure future for me, in case anything happens to DH or our marriage. I do have to say that DH is still back to the man I married 27 years ago, but I always have that fear that he will revert back to being an asshole along side evil SD.
Why is he retiring before
He gets Medicare ? Why is he not working a exter years and 1/2 instead of paying very high major medical. Find out the cost of Major Medical insurance First it could be $12,000 a year
I was wondering this same
I was wondering this same thing. Why isn't he working unitl actual retirement age?
Retiring Early
DH is retiring early at age of 63.5, his body is beat up from driving truck for 40+ years. We discussed this again last night ,over the phone, and he said that he can't go another year and a half. I suggested that when he retires to use some of 401k to pay for his insurance, till he is 65, or I could see how much it would cost to add him through my work. He has great insurance right now, but when he retires he has to find his own or pay $2300 a month to continue with the company insurance.
