Where do you waste money and think you could do better?

Crabs!! LOVE crabs. And blue claw are in season. Bushel for about $250 to cook at home and at least $80 for us to eat out. We crab it out twice a week. Don't care, won't change. Wink Wink

Oh WOW.. they are getting a price for those crabs. Hope they are #1's.

We just went out last weekend in S. MD and got number one's for 20 dollars a dozen which was a ridiculous price. They were good too. My DH used to be a crabber and we know several people who still crab so get them for a pretty decent price to eat at home also.

classyNJ's picture

#1's!! We get them from a crabber friend, but I would rather go out, put on a bib and let someone clean and cook them for me. Horrible but I don't care. I must eat crab LOL }:)

We have some crab pots that we put out. My inlaws and BIL will put them out also. We have waterfront so we can do it, but sometimes it's easier to just get them from our friends who do it for a living.. they pick out the big ones for us. We have people right across the street who will steam them and season them too!

Alcohol is not a splurge or waste of money. It's a necessity. Like water and oxygen.

Amen!
I need wine.
Although DH does consider it a splurge.
He wonders why I can't just but Boones Farm for $2.50 a bottle. He can't understand why I spend $12, $15, $21 on a bottle of one I like.
If I like it...why would it be a problem?

We eat out a lot. And at decent places- like not all fast food. It's more of a convenience thing because I would have to do the cooking and cleaning up afterwards and I always have to get BS to some sport or activity.

Shopping...

ESMOD's picture

We don't eat out too much but we do splurge on food. We like to cook and it makes it actually cheaper to eat spendy food at home vs eating out at some marginal restaurant. Oh, and beer, we buy beer. lol.

I also splurge on my hair but don't spend any money on mani or pedi stuff and try to only shop at places like Marshals or even good will!

zerostepdrama's picture

When I go to the salon for a cut and color it's easy $200. So I splurge like twice a year on that. LOL. I just started doing mani/pedis. I have had a few. It's nice but I can do without. I'd rather save the $30 and paint my toenails myself. Ha Ha.

I spend about 150+ with my hairdresser and probably go 4 times a year to keep my roots under control. I have to spend the money my hair is a "challenge" to keep lightened and in good condition since it's fine.

I am in a "bite my nails" phase.. so manicures won't do me a thing anyway. haha.

zerostepdrama's picture

I should go 4 times a year. I have grays showing through now Sad I find not only the cost painful but just being at the salon for that long. My hair is super long and if I do full color/highlights it just takes forever.

Food - eating out, alcohol, coffee... all food and beverage related. I really enjoy going out for a good meal and I often rationalize it "I had a long day, I don't feel like cooking" - when it would be a lot smarter to just eat what I have in the house.

Eating out and drinks!
I love to cook but sometimes it's just a pia so we go to the local pub. We've been paying attention to how often we go out and are making the choice to stay home and just have something easy like grilled cheese and soup.

I save for vacations, I have aseparate account but sometimes we go over, way over. I don't feel bad about it but at the same time I wish I could stick to the budget.

Mine is my hair. I use the Moraccan oil brand shampoo and conditioner. It is very pricey but so worth it. I have think coarse curly hair and it makes it so silky. I have awesome hair :).

WalkOnBy's picture

I splurge on my hair, waxing and my nails.

Highlights/Keratin 4 times a year

Acrylic nails - gel fills every other week

Monthly pedicures

Waxing the naughty bits

Waxing my brows

I am pretty high maintenance - lol!!

zerostepdrama's picture

So I did the gel manicure twice. Both times (from two different places, one recommended by a friend who gets hers done all the time) and my nails chipped within a week. My understanding is that is not supposed to happen. I loved how my nails looked but when they chipped I was so sad.

WalkOnBy's picture

No, that is NOT supposed to happen. It was probably old polish or not enough time under the lamp.

I have been with my nail tech for 17 years and the two times my gel chipped, it was because it was old polish.

I love that they don't chip and they stay shiny the entire time Smile

zerostepdrama's picture

I like to clean and clean the hell out of my house so I figured I am just too rough with my nails. I'll probably give it a try again when I go on vacation.

Wifeypoo's picture

Usually I like to get a pedicure before the summer starts, and maybe another towards the end of the summer, They alway talk me into getting gel finger nails even after I tell them, they don't actually last for me for more than three days, before they start chipping. For me, once they start to chip, I hate the way the look and I feel trashy with chipped fingernails. They say to come back to get them fixed but I never do.

notsobad's picture

Go get lazered. So worth it! All the hair is gone and never grows back. I got my underarms, lower legs and bikini done.

WalkOnBy's picture

I am thinking about that.

What's the cost? Pain level? lolol

notsobad's picture

Cost differs from place to place. Get references and find a good place. I got mine at a salon where they do all kinds of skin treatments botox, chem peels, lazer for dark spots on face/hands, everything short of plastic surgery. It cost me $900 and I needed 3 treatments. I could use one more because I have a few rough hairs. They said they'd do one more for $100 because the 3 treatment should have done it.

It feels like someone is snapping a rubber band on your skin over and over and over. It's the over and over that bugs me, like contractions, LOL.
It can get hot and they will blow cold air on the spot as they do it. There are some spots where the nerves are closer to the surface and those can really hurt. They will stop for a moment and let you regroup.
You can put Emla gel on and that will numb the area. I used it the first time but I didn't bother after that, except for my butt.

And under TMI - I had a full brazilian with a little landing strip done. (I didn't want to be totally bald, I've waxed it before and it felt too pubescent for me) My butt hole and labia were the most painful and the most awkward to have done.

I splurge on horse stuff. It's an expensive addiction, and there's always that next big ticket item I want.

Next on the wish list will be a trailer with full living quarters. $$$

zerostepdrama's picture

I go through phases with buying stuff for the house- redecorating.

When BS was at camp for a week, I redid the whole living room. New wall decorations, knick knacks, tv stand, I ordered new furniture (it hasn't came yet :-() I didn't need any of it. Well the furniture, maybe, since mine was older and used.

I tend to waste little bits of money. Like 89 cents for a container to hold coffee at the dollar store. I do that less these days, as I avoid clutter. But I like for things to have a place, and for that place to be cute.

I try to spend money on myself, but I only have so much discretionary income so I have to choose. Gym membership, clothes, coffee out, new earphones, hair done...

Fabric. I buy it because I like it and will one day use it.
My hair gets highlights etc every 12 weeks.
IKEA ... although it is a 3.5 hr drive away. I bought fabric to make winter curtains for my dining room. $5:99 a yd and they look AWESOME!
And the Container Store will open here in about 10 weeks . BRING.IT.ON!
