Need help please!

My sister lives in Washington state. She has been married for 17 years and has a 13 year old DD. Her and her DD have been severely emotionally abused and it's now time that they need to leave. We are from the Midwest so ideally she wants to be able to move back with DD but has heard horror stories about custody arrangements in Washington. Does anyone know anything about how they can both get away?

Thank you for the advice and suggestions. Her situation is even more messy as her husband is a pastor so no one will believe that he can do anything wrong. They are still living together but my sister and niece are currently at my house for three weeks to get away from him. We'll see what we can do with the information you guys gave. Thank you!
