Chef Got Told
By selectquote. Just as you ST posters predicted, he got turned down due to his shared failed medical exam.
But NOOOOOOO he wouldn't listen to me in the beginning and stop the boozing, possibly using "Big Lou." He felt that those ads were demeaning (he still thinks the Girhippo wasn't that bad despite her stealing from him, robbing him blind and alienating his children.)
He is still on his health kick but we will see how long it will last. He can reapply in a year.

Ugh sorry to hear.
Ugh sorry to hear.
Does he have any other life insurance?
Do you know (you don't have to say it here if you don't want to) exactly why they declined him?
Sometimes they just decline, won't tell you why, then you have to go digging deep for answers.
I will say, if he has no other life insurance it may be worth it to investigate, figure out what caused the decline (ex. Was the blood pressure, A1C, weight etc too high), then find a company (if there is one) that has no weight restrictions/has higher BP or A1C cutoff, etc. or in the interim get an accidental only policy (many of them come with 2k or so any-cause of death benefit) which has very minimal restrictions
If has has other life insurance policies then just wait a year but make sure to remedy whatever caused the decline in the first place.
Work with a broker who can shop a broad range of companies for you (vs the captive agents like selectquote who will push you to apply for their very limited selection of plans because that's all they are able to sell and that limited selection is easier to get declined)
And don't do fully underwritten first. Try a simplified Issue plan first (may cost a little bit more but it's easier to get approved) then once you have that in place you can try going fully underwritten for cheaper rates.
i only say this because it can be discouraging to get declined not to mention if you don't strategically apply these companies see a decline and will auto decline just because of what the other company/agent did.
Thank you!
Helpful info, thanks for sharing this!
No other LI
He got denied for extremely high liver enzymes aka alcohol abuse. He idiotically went for full med test and underwriting thinking he is perfectly healthy having a booze up from noon onward daily. He was definitely told by the broker that he won't be able to reapply for a year and only if his exam significantly improves.
Try PriMerica
They insured me when no one else would. Though I was 38 at the time.
I got my personal life
I got my personal life insurance policies in my 20's and early 30's, there was minimal health screening. However, a few years ago we took out key man life insurance in my company for the owner, one other person and me. The owner is only 3yrs older than me but due to his weight his policy is 5X what mine costs. It's insane.
