My husband was recently telling me about a co-worker of his who moved in with his fiance and her kids a few months ago.

DH: So, I don't think this situation of Bob's is going to last very long. I could see them breaking up pretty soon.

Me: Why?

DH: He's getting so frustrated with her and the kids. I guess he'll try to make rules and stuff and tell the kids what to do, but she won't let him. Like, if the kids misbehave and he comes up with a punishment, she always tells him he can't punish her kids.

Me: You don't say......

DH: Yeah. Meanwhile, he's paying for his fair share of the mortgage and other household expenses and spending extra money on these kids who aren't even his. Then he's not allowed to have a say in what goes on in his own house? It's bullshit.

Me: Really....

DH: And I guess she wants him to hang out with her kids all the time and be a "dad" to them now that they're living together. But these kids see their real dad all the time so it's not like they NEED Bob to be their dad or anything.

Me: I can't imagine how frustrating that would be....

He stops talking and looks at me for a minute.

DH: .......Oh.

He stops to think for another minute and gets a sheepish look on his face.

DH: Um......it's not REALLY the same as us though. These kids are older than SD. And......I guess they're.......pretty bad........

Me: *facepalm*
