O/T Las Vegas...
I mentioned in my last blog that I'm heading to Vegas in Feb, but I'm also heading there this weekend.
Not all of my kids want to come, and I don't want to make it a "mini vacation" because of the trip in Feb, so I'm looking at things to do that are basically the "free" sights in the area so the others don't feel like they've missed out.
I have a "as seen on TV" thing I'm doing with the kids, and in Vegas we will go to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop ("Pawn Stars") and visit several of the aquariums featured on the show "Tanked."
There's the volcano at the Mirage, the fountain show at Bellagio, the circus acts at Circus, Circus, and The Freemont Street Experience.
(Treasure Island's show is closed during most of December. Boo.)
So, ST peeps, anyone know of some free/cheap fun in the area that I've missed?
I'll be there F-Sun, so not too long, but looking for some things to break the monotony of cheer!

Go to the pawn shop EARLY.
Go to the pawn shop EARLY. By 11am the line to get in is 2 blocks long.
Just west of town is Red Rock Canyon. If you have a car, that's a great thing to do. Beautiful!
The Shark Tank/Pool at the Golden Nugget (downtown)
The observation deck on top of the Stratosphere
The roller coaster at New York, New York (if it's open)
The Mardi Gras parade at the Rio -- you can get on a shuttle at Harrah's that will take you to the Rio
Inexpensive transportation up and down the strip -- The Deuce bus. I believe it's $7 to ride as much as you want for 24 hrs. It goes from the Tropicana to downtown and back.
There's also a great mall that runs from Harrah's/Paris to Planet Hollywood. And of course, the Forum Shoppes at Caesar's. Also fun to hang at Caesar's and see the characters (Marc Antony, Cleopatra do their gig in front of the Theater)
And going to the chocolate factory in the Bellagio is a MUST
Can you tell I've spent a lot of time in Vegas (actually, we got married there too).

The pawn shop is THAT busy?!? Holy cow. May not be worth it... I'll already be on a schedule for the competition...

Just walking through the Hotels is entertaining. They are beautiful! Don't forget the pirate show at Treasure Island, and the Tigers at MGM.

I used to live in Henderson, just outside of Vegas in 2007/8, but a lot has changed since then. I've also heard that pawn shop is that crazy-busy! We like that show too. Went to the American Jewelry & Pawn in Detroit last year and the lines were out the door...
Sounds like B22S22 has Vegas down
Prior to meeting me, my DH
Prior to meeting me, my DH never went anywhere... then when we got married, we flew to Vegas. This spawned a Vegas obsession with my DH and we ended up going there 6 times over the course of 2 1/2 years (and have been back another 3 times in the last 3 years), each for AT LEAST 5 days.
You can only gamble so much... the Mint doesn't print enough money to keep up with DH. So I had to start finding cheap/free alternatives in order to keep our debt in the low 6-figures (just kidding).
Oh, and SAF -- the Hoover Dam isn't far away either. One other thing we did that was pretty cool -- about 45 min away (on the other side of Boulder City) is the Tecchaticup Gold Mine. It's family owned, and they will actually take you into part of the mine that has been there since the 1860's. From there you're only 5 min away from the Colorado River.
And about 40 min northeast of Las Vegas is the Valley of Fire, another drive-thru rock formation place with petroglyphs.
