OT Need Tips and Tricks for managing internet usage on personal devices with Teens

step off already's picture

As the kids get older and (my DD12 especially) becomes more interested in communicating online and learning about "older" things, I've been trying to learn how to lock down the internet and their devices.

I found a good blog on how to lock down her iPod touch and I even erased the Youtube and didn't think she'd be able to get it back on, but somehow she did. Not sure if I "Locked" it incorrectly or if she weaseled her way around it.

I know that att, my internet provider, has Parental Controls that I can download and it will give each child permissions and monitor their time. It's pretty slick, but as far as I can tell, It is only for the PC.

What do I do about the tablets, phones, xboxes and every other new device that comes out that has internet browsing capabilities?

Suggestions?

Change the password on your wireless signal. If she learns what it is, change it again.

Most of those devices require a Wi-Fi connection .. they're not like cell phones. If you block the connection to the internet, you don't need to worry about the device itself.

Well, I do want her to be able to do some things on her iPod - anything G-rated is fine with me and she likes to play the fashion games with her friends.

I changed her browser to the K9 browser and installed some other restrictions.

I'd just like to handle all of this in one spot.
