OT-Princess Popcorn the saga continues

PetSpoiler's picture

So I had my little fur princess spayed due to ovarian cysts.  She seems to be recovering from THAT at least.  When I took her for her post op checkup, the vet noticed a hard lump on the right side where she made the incision.  Her kidney was dilated.  Popcorn has hydronephrosis.  The vet can't rule out the possibility that she tied off Popcorn's ovarian blood vessel into her ureter but there is also a possibility that she has a stone blocking urine from going into her bladder.  She drained the fluid to give her relief.  According to bloodwork her kidney function is normal.  To complicate this further the vet went on vacation starting I think the day after she examined Popcorn and won't be back until Tuesday, so about two and a half weeks.   I've taken her to another vet nearby who has drained more fluid off of her twice.  She will see her regular vet Tuesday.  It is possible that Popcorn will lose her right kidney and this is a high risk surgery.

She also has polycystic kidneys.  I'm afraid my beautiful little spoiled fur princess won't be around as long. I know there's no cure for the polycystic kidneys, and don't know if there's treatment available.  Don't know if she'll lose her kidney and if she'll survive the operation if she does have to lose it.  This hurts.  These little babies don't have a long life span as it is if you compare it to a dog or cat.  They live 4-8 years.  I had one, Queen Biter, live to be seven and another, Queen Squeaky, live to be six.  Princess Popcorn is only three, as is the Stink Eye Queen.  Princess Chunky will be three in late fall.  Princess Popcorn is the tiniest guinea pig we have, but has the biggest personality.  She's won over my husband who typically doesn't get attached to any pets.  She has him trained to feed her watermelon whenever he cuts one up.  The guinea pigs are my daughter's, but I am Popcorn's human.   She's my buddy.  I just wish that I knew what was going to happen.  I wish I knew she'd get through this and live to be a little old lady who screams at me for food and treats and screams at my husband for watermelon.

Awww - that sucks. Sending you love and hugs. I know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet.

My hedgehog is five and they only live to be about 5 or six.  I know it sucks so bad.  Giant hugs.

Thanks so much!  Hoping for some good news from the vet.  I know with the polycystic kidneys, she may not live as long as Princess Chunky and the Stink Eye Queen might, barring any unknown health problems that they may have or develop.  I talked with another vet and he said she could live to five or six years, maybe.  Either way she will have to have surgery to either remove her right kidney or remove the blockage from her kidney, which is risky.  This just really stinks.
