Can anyone offer advice on custody hearings?
My SS(33) moved in with my husband and I about a year ago with his 5yo, my SGD. The BM lives in another state, had their 2yr son, who was taken by CS and put into foster care in October and she is now facing legal charges for stealing checks.
My SS(33) filed papers for sole custody (and child support) of his daughter and the hearing is next week. Because the BM doesn’t really have a permanent residence right now, and she refuses to sign for certified letters, it appears that she hasn’t received the notice of the hearing. 1st question – what happens if she doesn’t show up? Is he automatically awarded sole custody?
Let’s say that she HAS received the notice but she hasn’t said anything about it. What is the hearing going to be like? What types of questions will be asked? My SS asked me to go along with him for support and I told him that I would. At what capacity should I be involved in the hearing? Should I just sit there as ‘support’ for my SS, or should I speak up and help answer questions? They are living in our house and my husband and I are supporting both of them.
I have no idea what goes on in custody hearings, or child support hearings for that matter. I’m sure that each state is different, we’re in NJ. I’m hoping to get a general idea of what to expect next week.
Thanks!

I know for some of you that
I know for some of you that your DH have been through custody hearings with the BM. If so, have any of you been present that you can give me a brief, high-level outline as to what goes on? I'd really appreciate it!!
