O/T Question about Digital SLR camera shopping, help/Advice??

Helena.Handbasket's picture

Hope no one minds I posted an off-topic. I know there are some of you who are photography buffs.

I'm an amateur looking to buy a dslr camera. Right now its between the Nikon 5100 and Canon T3i

I need image stabilization. I think they both have that. Really this is something for me to take vacation, baby pics, and some natural photos. I love taking pics of scenery and macro size type stuff (bugs, flower petals). The push for my purchase though is new baby coming soon Smile

What is keeping me from buying the Nikon? No 1080p video and SD16 has a nikon. Which just pisses me off her dad bought her that expensive camera and she never uses it. Yet when I want to use it, she is suddenly interested.

I kinda would rather have a different brand, then she (and her father) can't touch MY stuff. Wink

But I don't want to make a bad decision based on animosity either.

Thanks!

I have the Canon, got it for Christmas from DH. I Love it!!! Honestly I dont think you could go wrong with either one, but I think Id go with the one that is different from SD. I could just see your lenses & accessories coming up missing if you have the same brand.

Good Luck with the camera & your upcoming baby!!

I have a Nikon. But I know if I was you and SD had a Nikon, I would purposely buy Canon. And actually both models you listed are great. I like the idea someone said that you wouldn't want your stuff to go missing anyway. (for having same brand as SD)

Happy Shooting. Smile

I have the Canon... and lemme tell you I love it! My DS plays hockey and in order to get great pictures of him, I either need to take them thru the glass, or up high and far away above the net (that is above the glass). I have taken superb pictures, especially on the fast action setting with the "extreme" telephoto lens.

Hi all! Thanks for the feedback. It looks like the majority is the canon. Sams has a nice deal on both where you get a package including two lenses. The prices aren't that far apart either.

Only you guys would understand why SD's ownership of a Nikon would make me want a canon. I'm glad the canon is a good product.

canon is great and so is nikon. i finally made my decision and got the nikon. however i would say go to the store and try them out. bring your own sd card and then go home and see how the images/video look before you make your decision.

also, video on the dslr's are weird. you have to manually focus, it's awkward to hold and you'll have to get used to it. it's a GREAT shot if you can do it though.

i have shaky hands and need stabilization too. i know for me the difference between the nikon d3100 and the canon t1i was huge. nikon was hands down better than canon and i was a huge canon fan before that.

however i was playing around with the canon d60 and it was miles better than the t1i. had a REALLY hard time deciding between the canon d60 vs nikon d7000. made dh pick his favorite.

i say screw sd...get what is best for you. and what you are most comfortable with. also play around with the controls to decide which one has a better feel.

good luck!

I shoot Canon and I wouldn't switch for anything. Get quality lenses and you will be fine.

I also faced many hurdles when my digital SLR camera created problems. I carried it to a digital photo shop and the professional photographer removed its technical faults.
